Not sure if you will read this but I thought I would try.
I live in South Carolina now (for the past year) but I am from Michigan myself.
Have been offered a pretty good job by Marriott. (Frenchman's)
I have never been to St. Thomas and not sure what to do. There is not a lot you can find out on-line unless you are just vacationing.
I have 2 dogs and a 4yr old child.
Want to be VERY safe of course having him.
Want to live as close to work as possible.
Need a good school for him.
So, any tips. What kind of info do you have.
If I move there, what would I be gaining or possibly giving up?

Thanks for any help.

baysider,

You wrote:

"and we have a school nurse."

That is because of a near-tragedy that happened in the not-so-distant past to that six-year-old girl on school grouns, during school hours (the one who suffered a head injury, and she was kept waiting for a number of hours for emergency services).

I appreciate your commitment to public education, and we too are presently a public school family. But the fact remains - STT is like any poor school district stateside. However, credit must be given to the local uni for its education degree program. And while I was a Harvard student, we had three undergrads from STT, who attended the public schools. But resources lack, and that was my point.

I don't see why the issue has to be on a relo board - it is topical to anyone, possible resident or present resident, or any student of present or history of education.

I can't comment on the schools themselves but I think a fair judgement can be made of the school discipline and standards as to behavior by the nature of their students. I have had many an occasion to be amongst the students, elementary and better, while at the store or along the street side near or with them. I have always found them to be well mannered and behaved. Never a cross word, smoking or grab assing. Also neatly dressed in like uniforms. Not at all like what I have experienced state side. Just the opposite is the norm and the kids are dressed more like they are going to a rock concert than school. Just my 2 cents.

I think the suggest that this topic was better suited to the relocation board relfects the purpose of this board which is primarily for those who are visiting the VI, not planning to stay. The subject of schools would, naturally, not be of any interest to them.

Schools in the VI has been discussed extensively (some would say ad naseum) on the Relocation Board.
