dear islander,

we will be visiting st. croix later this month (june) and interested in both mountain biking and using the bike for transportation on the island, too.

MOUNTAIN BIKING
was wondering if there are specific mountain bike trails on the island? and are there any regulations to where to go or not to go? will it be too hot to ride during the day?

COMMUTING
are the roads in good surface condition?
do car drivers respect cyclists?
would the bikes be safe while visiting different locations locked up?

RENTALS
recommondations for good rental shops?
(looking for bikes in good-best condition)

thank you for any information you may have,
jenni

Hello Jenni,

I don't know of any specific 'bike trails', but definately ask the bike rental shop - they will know. They will also be best able to direct you on where, what, when in terms of riding on St. Croix.

Its hot here. Too hot is a matter of what you are used to I suppose. June, July, August, September are hot, humid months. And its been extra hot lately, or so it feels. Besides the heat, another concern would be traffic on busier roads. Drivers are used to having cyclist on the roads practicing as St. Croix host a triatholon, http://www.stcroixtriathlon.com/. Still on busier roads use care and also when going around corners.

Most roads are in good condition. Some have pot holes, so keep your eyes open - :). Locked up the bikes should be safe when visiting sites, exploring.

The only bike rental I know of on St. Croix is http://endurancesportsvi.com/site/intro.cfm

There was also a bike tour on St. Croix but I can't seem to locate the information right now.
