*Is there anywhere on St. John's that one could rent a motorcycle?

I doubt it - it's not safe to ride motorcycles on the island. The roads are too steep and winding, requiring you to sometimes drive at a crawl and honk your horn as you crest hills or make hairpin turns because you can't see what's coming just beyond (such as a tourbus full of people). Also, some of the roads are not developed (paved) and can be rocky and rough.

Hi Jill
There is a place in Cruz Bay that rents scooters, they are located in the lumberyard next to Appliance Plus. Personally I agree with Bluwater and would not rent on St John (no "s" ;)) for all his excellent reasons.

I have been driving my motorcycles ('74 Honda CB450,'99 Honda Rebel 205 and'74 Harley Davidson Sportster) here for over 7 years and it has been my experience that driving a bike here is no less safe than driving a car. You just need to be very aware of your surroundings. The steepness of the hills is of no concern until it rains. The limit on the island (STT) is 35 mph. Stay under that, and go slowly around corners, as you never know what's around the corner. Could be a tourists taking pics, a donkey, a pig, a herd of goats, a taxi pulled over to point out the views, etc. Just use your head and you will be fine.

Marty: Motorcycles and scooters are inherently more dangerous than cars because you lack protection from the road and other vehicles. As you know from your experience (that you have openly described on this board), you would not have been injured had you been in a car. Also there are some medical specialties that we do not have here full-time, a neurosurgeon for one. Visitors should beware that air evacuation is expensive. While I fully understand your enjoyment of motorcycles, I think visitors should be given both sides of the story.
