If you are really sensitive, make sure you sit on top where you will get fresh air and towards the center to minimize any rolling motion. The trip from Red Hook is shorter than that from CA and tends to be a smoother ride.

Sharks? The ferry is bigger than an of the sharks...no worries.

Hi peaceluv.

You can buy "Bonine" over the counter at the drug store. It prevents motion sickness and does not make you drowsy. I know many folks use the stuff when they're on cruises as do folks who get car sick or air sick.

I get motion sickness very easily also. Dramamine seems to work wonders when flying, boating, etc. I take the kind that makes me a little drowsy on the plane and the non-drowsy kind the rest of the time. I haven't done the 'people ferry' -- always the auto barge. I get out of the Jeep and and stand somewhere where the wind can hit me in the face and I can see where we are going while on the ferry. No problems at all on the auto ferry. When riding in a Jeep on St. John it helps to have the top down. Try to look where the vehicle is going. Don't look at the side view too much unless you can see for a good distance. If possible, make yourself the designated driver and you won't have any issues at all (something about being able to anticipate the movements you are experiencing is the key). The open air taxis are great too -- plenty of fresh air. You'll be totally fine! I can vomit from simply watching a ferris wheel and I have no problems on St. John. Have a SUPER trip!

The trip between Cruz Bay and Red Hook really is fast (maybe 10 minutes) and smooth. Otherwise, another drug to try is a prescription called Meclazine. I just tried it this weekend for seasickness related only to reading on our sail boat and it worked great!! It takes a good hour to kick in then lasts a long time. I noticed that I slept like the dead that night and wonder if it eventually makes you sleepy but it wasn't something I noticed during the day.

There is also a small patch that goes behind your ear and works for up to 72 hours at a time. It is an rx, called Trans Derm Scop. Your doc should be familiar with it an able to call it in to most pharmacies.
