I read a previous post on this subject, all Good info. got a bit more detail I'm trying to work out.

I completely understand Island time, i.e., sit back, have a rum punch, relax......but with the ferries.......wondering how much time it takes to get from Airport to Cruz Bay (assuming all goes to plan with plane, taxi, ferry). Here's the dilemma.........plane lands 2:00pm, St. John Car Rental closes at 5 and advises if you're late - wait till next day to get a car. We really don't want to wait (groceries for condo that night, and hit beaches next day - not get rental car next day!)

Any thoughts: either taxi/ferry combo will get me to Cruz Bay before 5 pm with a 2pm airport arrival, or should I look to a rental company that is open later.......

You'll have plenty of time. If your flight is late, and then if you have to wait for the taxi van to fill, and then if the taxi stops somewhere enroute to Red Hook to drop someone off---you still have plenty of time to make the 4:00 ferry. And then if the 4:00 ferry leaves late-----you still have plenty of time to reach STJ and get to SJCR well before 5:00.

So sit back, have a rum punch, relax....

In terms of driving time; airport to Charlotte Amalie STJ ferry departure area... 12-15 minutes in low traffic. And to Red Hook about 35-40 minutes in low traffic. It may take longer if the taxi stops at locations before the ferry to drop people off or if there is traffic. Red Hook ferry takes about 15-20 minutes and Charlotte Amalie ferry about 40 minutes.

If flight is on time and all goes to plan, there is a 3pm ferry departure from Charlotte Amalie; if you are lucky in terms of luggage pick up being quick, taxi being ready to take off when you're ready, no traffic you just might make it. *-) Otherwise you should make the 4pm Red Hook ferry departure.

You SHOULD be alright, but don't tarry ESPECIALLY depending on what day of the week you come in. If you land on Tuesday or Wednesday, those are the days that have the most ship in and traffic can be murderous.

MY suggestion is that you pre-arrange a taxi or ride to Red Hook, because if you get in on Tuesday or Wednseday and hit town between 2:45-4:00, it's gonna be miserable. If you come in on those days, tell your taxi driver to take the NORTH ROAD to Red Hook, it'll cut your drive time literally in half.

My suggestion is to get a another car rental agency that won't close at five, I believe the others do wait.

Another thought that has worked for us, is have your rental dropped at your villa or hotel. Then no problems with timing or missed schedules.
