Could one not use a moped as a form of transportation on the island? Do they have rentals? Will be visiting St. Thomas for a week in August.

I heard a rumor that you can rent them downtown for the shopping area but I wouldn't even ride a motorcycle around the island much less try it on a moped. Besides they don't have enough power for the hills.

There is a relatively new motor scooter rental place across from Havensight (where the cruise ships come in). The manager has been quoted as saying you have to have experience driving one for him to rent, however I have seen tourists driving up sidewalks and careening down streets, so I guess that rule might not get followed. Do you have good health insurance that includes "Life Flight" to Puerto Rico? There is no neurosurgeon on island and that is where they would send you...

No neurosurgeon? Says who? He was alive and well and still living on St. Thomas the last time I talked to him.

You probably were speaking to a neurologist... I promise, there is no neuro surgery...

Yes there is a scooter renter called Island Scooter, it is located in Havensight. I have seen many cruise ship visitors using them to 'buzz' around the shopping area in Havensight to Charlotte Amalie and there abouts. I have also seen quite a few folks out on the main roads. Only danger there is, the roads are small as it is, and local drivers don't pay attention to things smaller then cars, so will pass you. If you aren't used to driving here on curvy roads it may be nerve wrecking. Otherwise sure you could use this to get around. If you are visiting for a longer period, rather then just a day with a cruise, then a car is probably better - as if you wanted to go out at night to dinner for example, a car would be more ideal. Up to you -they are both options.
