Roads in the VI are very steep and windey. Often they're not in very good shape and there's little if any shoulder. When it rains they can't get very slick.Traffic is not at all cycle/moped-friendly.

Here's a link to a video shot on STJ.

That may lend some perspective.

Hi Patti,

While I personally wouldn't take the risk , I have seen more and more folks riding mopeds and the like around the island. During the day and in dry weather it wouldn't be too bad. At night or in the rain could be tough.

Here is a website to check out:

You can rent mopeds but they are the most dangerous thing to rent here. They are hard to get up the mountain hills, I have seen people walking their bikes up the hill. Prone to accidents- not a good idea. Get a car and you will be safe and happy once you see these roads you will understand. A jeep is the next worst- they roll over...

Sorry to burst your bubble.

Lived here 34 years and know the ropes.

Actually had a friend who sold timeshares on St John and afterwards Frenchman's who had on both islands a moped for a couple of years. It was a SHE. She survived and is now on Kauai.

Me, hell I always thought she was crazy.

I too, feel mopeds are very dangerous and this comes from a girl who rode motorcycle most of my life! ( not here, thankyou!) Ok, I've lived here over half my life now, so the first half of my life! I have seen tourists get hit and almost hit and we value you too much to see something happen to you! Get a car and have something metal all the way around you!
For those who will do it anyway....wear long pants, preferably jeans, boots or sneakers at the least and for sure a helmet! Saw a guy the other day...shorts, T, flip-flops. This is no way to be riding a motorcycle or a moped! I told him he was crazy!

I have a moped and I've rented them on Sanibel, FLA and in Key West.

DO NOT rent one on STT. It's probably the most dangerous thing you could do on your vacation.

In Key West (which is flat) I've scene 2 accidents.

Even though I know how to drive one and I'm very comfortable with them, it's just not something I would do on vacation in STT.

On my visits to STT I would not use one. My son lives on STT and sometimes uses one. I made him list me as the beneficiary on his insurance policy.

Yes you can rent them on STT. Thing is, they are about $50 (ballpark) a day whereas an econo car will be less than $20. You do the math.
