We have traveled to the USVI many times on vacation and are now interested in planning a longer-term stay. We're thinking of 3 months but we've never been away from home that long, so we want a month-to-month condo. Our questions are:
- Any advice on how to find this?
- How far in advance should we book this?
- Should we do a shorter trip first to view options and book something?
Thank you!
Three months is a long time so perhaps a one month rental would be ideal. Please visit our website and reviews for a true feeling of island life. We do offer a discount for stays of 30 nights or more. Magens Valley Inn is centrally located.

Off season you might get the best deals for a 3 month rental.
May, June, July, August, September. Things start to pick back up mid October.
You can check vacation rental sites like, VRBO, Homeaway,
Flipkey, etc.
Much more difficult and expensive to find something during the height of tourist season Jan - March.
Good luck.
You can also check Craig's List: http://virgin.craigslist.org
but beware of scams like this one:

Obviously, no heat nor snow removal necessary in tropics.
Be a bit careful with Craigs List. There's been several scammers posting properties they don't own. I wouldn't say don't do it, but definitely check it out before you pay.
True. The most common is advertising condos at well known complexes when they lift the photos and descriptions of units from websites such as vrbo and post them at a monthly rent of $7-800 when the going rate for those units as vacation rentals are $250/night and any term rentals are upwards of $1200. But whatever the scam ad, as soon as you express interest you'll get a long and rambling response with a story about the owner being posted overseas (UK is the most popular) and how they need a "nice person like you" to rent their place and take care of it. Correspond further and you'll find they took the keys with them but will send them to you the minute you transfer money to them ... it never ends!
Yes, if you can swing it, take a short trip and check out what's available in person!
We are doing the same thing. Have vacationed in USVI several times and decided to stay longer in 2017. Signed up for February (4 weeks) and later added another 10 days. We got condo through VRBO last spring - lots of choices in many STT locations. Bought plane tickets in summer when prices were lower. Agree with comments about Craigslist. We communicated with one of the scammers - and when they told us to wire money, we figured out what was going on!
Booking the same place for three consecutive months can be tough. Demand is high, and a lot of places are scheduled well in advance. If anyone else is looking for a long-term stay to sample island life, your best bet might be to try one month at first or maybe combine stays at two or three different places across several months. That would also allow you to stay in different parts of the islands to see which areas you might like best.
Also try to contact VRBO or other listings directly before you book anything. You might be able to negotiate a better rate for a long-term rental. Prices are usually set based on the assumption they'll just be renting out for a few days or maybe a week at a time.
