Will be arriving on the 9th for 10 days. Chartered a sailboat. Are travelers checks accepted everywhere? Credit cards? Don' want to carry a lot of cash.

Traveler Checks are kinda of a pain. All the islands have ATMs so you can get cash when and where you need it. Usally a $3 fee. Most credit cards are accepted everywhere with the exception of discover and amex. Little harder to find places that accept those two. MC or Visa is the best way to go.

most everyone wants cash - if not a business. if a business they take atm cards. i took traveler's checks last time and found it more of a hassle. taxis don't want them, and restaurants grunt especially when they take visa!

I have to agree with the responses - for the last ten years going to islands we divide our $$$ into cash, credit card, ATM card and a couple of personal checks - with the bulk being cash. I usually find out ahead who will and will not accept cards, etc. and use the cards for what I can. I have found also that personal checks are accepted more readily than a traveler's check. You will need the cash for taxis, beverages, etc. - it might be a hassle to carry that much cash - but it's much less hassle than trying to find it once you are there! Get a money belt or something... Have a super trip!! 🙂

I second the motion.I also make sure that I have a good selection of tens, fives, and ones so that I either have exact change or ALMOST exact change. I went for a week and my wife and I EACH took $500 in cash. We had leftovers, but I think it's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Where is your chartered boat going? I'm guessing you're not going to stay within the USVI for the entire 10 days.

You will be fine in the USVIs, but if you plan to head over the Jost and Anegada in the BVIs, you will need cash. ATMs are available on Tortola and Virgin Gorda. Most restaurants on Jost take cards, but there are no ATMs on the island and you might want to buy something at a shop, etc. On Anegada, very few places accept cards - no ATMS available. Just hit the ATM when you clear customs, which I assume you'll do in Road Town, Tortola.
