Spirit Airlines had a sale in Novermber and we paid around $300 each for roundtrip from Detroit to STT, traveling Tuesday to Tuesday. We had reservations at Secret Harbor on STT until a Westin villa auction came up on ebay. It was a studio and our winning bid was $2050 for 7 nights. We knew the unit would be smaller, but thought we'd enjoy the pool. Timeshares and villas are usually Saturday to Saturday or in our case, Sunday to Sunday, but changing the air portion was too expensive so we booked two nights at Maho Bay Camps. We booked a 7 passenger Dodge Durango for $550 from Budget with pick-up in STT.

Spirit is now charging for 2nd bag. If you rent from Budget, bring a copy of your transaction. They tried to give me a smaller vehicle, saying Durangos are $750 and I only paid for a Liberty. It was only after I produced the paperwork from their own web site, that they gave in. I warned the two people waiting in line behind me about what they tried to do and one customer said, "I know. I come here a lot and they always try it on me, too".

We drove to Red Hook, stopping at Food Center to buy $200 worth of groceries. I think there must be a better market, as the fish I bought turned out to be bad. I brought some items from home, such as flour, spices, some canned goods, and Crystal Light drink packets (a hit with the kids) We parked in the covered parking structure and ate lunch at Molly Malones, which was good. One way car ferry was $30 and left within 15 minutes.

Did you book through the general Budget website or the St Thomas Budget website? We also have a Durango reserved fro $550 and I noticed on the St thomas website that the Durango costs $750, just like you said. I have all my paperwork I will be bringing with me so they better not try to charge me more!

I leave next week on Spirit out of Detroit, but understand that the 2nd bag charge would not take effect until June travel. We most likely won't have more than one checked bag a piece anyway. Our rate, which I bought in October, is $717 for two, all taxes/fees included.

I booked Budget through the general budget web site, not the St. John web site.

Spirit Airlines was great except for the return flight. We spent at least 45 minutes at the desk with only one party in front of us. Even when we got up to the counter, they just stand there. It was pathetic. It took at least 15 minutes for them to find us seats. Then we had another 40 minutes in the customs line and another 20 in the security line. The airport wasn't that busy and we barely made the flight.

The second bag charge IS in effect now. The woman in front of us handed over the money after she complained about it. Another woman beside me told the Spirit employee, "This wasn't in effect when I bought my ticket", and the man behind the desk waived her fee.
