We're vacationing on St. John in June and have a reservation for a mini van (there's six of us plus baggage). I would like to know if a mini van will be adequate to get around on St. John. Our house is on the east end of the island at Hansen Bay, about 30 minutes from Cruz Bay and 10 minutes from Coral Bay. Rental companies recommended the mini van; however, the on site manager for the house doesn't think it will be adequate. I'm interested in others experiences traveling the roads around St. John, in particular, the east end.

Why does the manager think it won't work? If its because of the driveway to the house or the roads leading in, I'd take her/his advice.

We stayed on east end in february.
You need 4 wheel drive vehicle(s)
for 6 people most likely 2 . It is far from ferry dock and you will only want to make one trip .
east end is laid back relaxing and interesting shops and restaurants etc..
scenery is unbeatable. some of the roads have twisty steep turns and if wet can be difficult to navigate without 4 wheel drive.
We also purchased groceries in cruz bay before we went to east end. there is grocery store in east end but not as large as one in cruz bay.

If it's a family scenario I would consider a Durango and a couple of bungie cords in case you cannot get all of the luggage up top. Conrad Sutton rents those, but you are pretty near-term and availability might be a challenge. Conrad does not have them listed on his web site yet, but we saw them in March. If it is a group of couples, go with more than one vehicle, otherwise you'll be moving at the speed of the slowest person.

I would consider driving a mini-van to Hansen Bay, but would not want to do that repeatedly. If you are an inexperienced STJ driver I would not chance it even once. There is one turn and one hill on the way that would be chancey, not including villa access.

Another thought, if you have problems finding a vehicle on STJ, try renting on St. Thomas and taking the car barge.

Cheers, RickG

Thanks for the input. We've going for 2 4WD vehicles instead of the mini van.
