I realize this question has been posed before, however just to clarify another question out of curiosity I am re-visiting the topic. I understand metal detecting is not permitted within the boundaries of the national park on St. John. However as I pulled up a map from the following link , http://home.nps.gov/applications/parks/viis/ppMaps/VIISmap1.pdf
I notice that there are some areas of St. John that are not included in the national park boundaries. So as I read previous threads I find statements indicating that it is not permitted in St John due to the fact that it is a national park, but then when looking at the map I see that not all of the island is within the National Park boundaries, indicating that it is possible in these areas. If I am incorrect, someone please inform, would love input. Just trying to clarify before proceding 🙂 Thank you for any input!

As long as you are outside national park areas you will be fine. The whole island is not a national park.
