OK....after reading the bugs and villas thread and I'm ok with the creatures on ST John as it's where they live and where we visit, but it got me thinking what if my 3 yr old decides to play with a scorpion....he is a little boy after all. Also, I am an insulin dependant diabetic...I am VERY well controlled and have never needed medical intervention for a high or low blood sugar, but you never know. I am also part of large group of 24 (traveling with Rick G and Chris G my brothers who post on this board too) with a TON of kids and 4 seniors. What do we do if we have a medical emergency?

Is it as simple as calling 911?

11 DAYS AND COUNTING!!!! 🙂

Yes, there is a full clinic that has all you should need. They do have an ambulance as well.

Yes they have a ambulance , but they cannot treat ever thing. And as far as the scorpion's go my so got but at the bottom of Reef Bay and we went to the hospital (we lived there) and they were excellent Dr. Dejames is awesome , come to find out the scorpion's are not poisonous. So all was well,
But 2 months ago I went back for a small holiday fell on a step and broke my ankle in 3 places and was treated in my car thats how bad the pain was, that they couldn't help me I had to go to Stthomas. So I did and they are not the best there. The attitude on SJ was much better , the just could do a x-ray . The x-ray machine is only there certain days. I would have mattered though I had to have surgery. All was well over all , now I'm mending to plot my next trip!

Hey NE- we are totally spoiled in our neck of the woods with medical care so by all means, keep that diabetes in check because the services are limited. I work in a hospital and was very curious about the full extent of services between STJ and STT and for some situations, they are very, very limited. Also, on our last trip in Nov 05, the police/ambulance staff didn't even show up at the Coral Bay station one day so if you needed service from that station you couldn't get it. That never stops us from loving STJ anyway, but from a spoiled medical services person's point of view, certain situations will be tricky!

If you have an emergency, remember that calling 911 from your cell phone may route you to Puerto Rico's 911. To ensure that you reach the VI 911, call 340-776-9110 (from your cell phone). It would also be quicker to call the St. John police station directly at 693-8880, because the 911 operators are not on St. John. I know, it's a lot of numbers to remember, but in an emergency it could save time. Hopefully, you won't have to use any of these numbers...have fun!

yolanda: Just for clarity- there is full-time x-ray (and CT and MRI) at the RLS Hospital (part of the Schneider Regional Medical Center) on St Thomas. Also we have orthopedic surgeons, ER docs, a cardiologist, ENT, allergist, several other specialties and "regular" doctors. The Myrah Keating Smith Community Health Center on St John is another part of the Schneider Medical System, along with the Charlotte Kimelman Cancer Institute. You can read about it here: http://www.rlshospital.org/

Before my wife died in Aug. we had been to St John 3 times this year each time was on a week that she didn't have chemo and each time we went to Schneider Regional Medical Center to have blood work done the first time we did it it took us about an hour her being a new client after that we were in and out in 20 min they would do the tests and fax the results to her doc in WI and he would call us at the villa on STJ with what we had to do with her meds it worked great but it always seemed that since we were in STT she had to go Jewelry shopping.

Waterguy, Sorry about your loss. I would assume for this reason the "islands" hold a special meaning for you.

Hey NE, Tell Ryan that Uncle Rick will cook his scorpions up right nice for him. The no-see-ums and mosquitos are a bigger threat. Don't forget the mongoose and donkeys eating your lunch right out of the cooler.

Last trip we had a tree rat run across our deck one night. A minute later three more tree rats followed that girls trail. The ladies started doing the stompada and one of the love sick boy rats fell in the pool. That's what I figured that big fish net lookin' thing on the pole was for? After that we had a new rule at the villa - no girl rats in estrus allowed on the pool deck.

Insulin dependence? Cruzan dependence! I need a pump.

Cheers, RickG

Uncle Rick (Rick G),

Ryan ate one of Murphy's (our Golden Retriever) biscuits last night and started to gag on top of Colin's (his brother) homework. Lucky for us he did not toss his biscuit all over the place and was able to gain control. Never a dull moment! I hope all the critters HIDE when they see him running!

You need to buy better dog biscuits if Ryan can't get one down. I thought you only fed your dog chicken legs from Popeyes?

Cheer, RickG
