*Can you bring meat from the US into St Thomas?
It appears so I have heard stories of freezing the meat and using foil etc. any one else have info?
Thanks, have tried contacting Customs.
I heard and read many people bring the food frozen in collapsable coolers to save money for such items. I assume there is no problem since officially we are not traveling 'out of and back into' the US.
We are doing this next month so I hope there is no problem
Went to St John's a few years ago with three hungry teenaged boys. We took lots of steaks and hamburger etc. to keep the cost down. We just frozethem and popped it into the cooler with dry ice, taped it up and away we went. The US Virgin Islands are still part of the US so there are no custom issues. Were going back next month (minus the boys this time). Can't wait!!!
Dry Ice - I contacted the airlines regarding dry ice and they advised that there would be an extra fee if it is used as it is considered hazardous. We have brought food such as special sliced meats for a picky 8 year old etc. We froze them before leaving and put them in our folding cooler along with the frozen film. Everything arrived without any problems or issues.
I recently checked with US airlines and they permit up to 5 lbs of Dry Ice. We pack frozen meats on most of our trips to the islands and only had problems once with Customs in Grand Cayman. They took eveything not in it's orginal "USDA" stamped packaging. I wouldn't chance it again, someone had one heck of a BBQ on our tab.
I don't think it should be a problem as long as it is frozen or processed. I am planning on carrying down a smoked brisket - frozen of course. My mom takes bacon and packaged link sausage frozen into Panama all of the time.
Good luck
