We're renting a condo at Sapphire Beach and I needed a few things from the grocery so I drove over to Red Hook a half mile away. I've always used Marina Market since we've been coming to Sapphire but this time the doors were locked and the place was empty. While having lunch at Iggie's at Bolongo Bay we asked the bartender about it and she said they had to close because of the $26,000 per month electricity bill WAPA (Power company) was charging them. Too bad, because I don't think there's anywhere else to get groceries in Red Hook. Closest super Mkt. is Food Center a few miles further up the road.
I know. Disappointing. From what heard, Marina Market also experienced some management changes. I don't have full story, but I believe WAPA was only one factor.
WAPA was the least of the problems where that closing was concerned (it's been a couple of months now). There's a small convenience store now across the street in AYH and also a small store at the gas station where you can pick up snacks and basics.
Good to know about the AYH store and the gas station. Hopefully Marina Market will be operating again when we come back in a year.
The gas station and the minimart do not compare. The quality and selection and convience that was offered by Marina market was defienetly worth the slightly higher prices. A big loss to Red Hook for sure.
My sincere apologies if I intimated that the minimart and the gas station store were in any way a replacement for the array of goods which Marina Market offered. I certainly did not intend to suggest they're comparable retail outlets. As I said, "snacks and basics" can be picked up at either/both but obviously for more variety a trip to a regular supermarket is in order.
I definitely understood what you meant by snacks and basics. I'd go to Food Center for anything else.
