Has anyone stayed here before? Can you tell me if this is a good place to stay? They have reasonable rates. Otherwise do you know of anywhere else for about 100.00 per nite. thanks

I just got back from my trip Jan 8-14. I considered staying there, but ultimately decided upon Hotel 1829. I stayed at 1829 one night in a modest room, as we were to pick up the marriage license the next day and travel on to our villa in STJ.

The Hotel is lovely, old world charm, lots of nooks and crannies, overflowing with plants--I thought it very romantic. Our room was indeed very modest: full bed tucked into a small room with tiny bathroom, heavy wood door, real keys. It was $125 with tax, high season. There is a bar there, where once the author Graham Greene hung out--Clemens serves the drinks strong. They also have a small dip pool for refreshment and in the morning, until 10am, continental breakfast is served. Children, I believe, are discouraged and its not really a spot for children. It is on the edge of the shopping district, close to the government building and you can walk to the STJ ferry, if you have carry on, which we did.

I would recommend the Hotel 1829 for a day stay or so. If you are thinking of staying there longer than one night, I would suggest a superior room or perhaps a suite. I walked around the courtyards and the suites look decadent.

Hotel 1829 has a website, you can google it using hotel 1829, usvi key words. There is also another hotel next door that has lower rates, I can't comment on it as I didn't investigate it. There is also Herve's restaurant, but do yourself a favor and visit Cuzzin's which is walking distance and has excellent West Indies food.

Hope this helps you decide!
Connie
