A heads-up for all of those considering travelling to STT for next winter.......

I just checked the airfare for next winter out of Newark, NJ on Continental (Non-Stop to STT).

The prices really haven't changed much since last season..........

Last January (2008) our friends came down for a visit and paid $298. + $60.30 (taxes/fees) for a total of $358.30 (Mid Week) round trip each.

For mid January (Jan 21/28) and mid February 2009 the "Mid Week" fare on Continental is $338. + $48.30 (taxes/fees) for a total of $386.30 round trip.

That's only $28. more for a round trip non-stop flight. out of Newark.........not bad considering all the "bad news" about the airlines substantially increasing their fares.

Hope this helps someone!

I don't know which airline it is, but I heard they're going to charge you 15.00 for a blanket now? Everytime I've been on a plane, they never had enough blankets anyway, so it doesn't affect me....but I think now they're getting desperate. They were crap blankets anyway.

Future, that's a great price. Hop on it.

Charging for blankets is ridiculous! I don't use them anyway because you never know who used it before you and what germs might be lurking!

I'd also be sure to closely watch the TSA rep if you have precious or valuable things:

According to an AP news report, JetBlue is now charging customers $7 for an "eco-friendly" travel blanket and pillow that can be purchased on flights longer than two hours. The pair come in a kit with a $5 coupon to home furnishings retailer Bed Bath and Beyond. Although JetBlue doesn't come here, all the airlines follow suit and all are trying to find ways to compensate for fuel prices in an effort to keep their heads (or wings) above water. Cheers!

I would consider Newark, but I don't know if I would want the added hassle of driving up there for the flight from Philly or the added expense of a hotel the night before.

Also trying to use my FF miles is rediculous, although possible.

The we have a 149.00 companion ticket and I have no idea how that works.

I'm obsessed with trying to get back.

Chris at Work said it all - "Buy now before they wake up."

Travel forums all over the world are filled with similar posts from likewise frustrated airline passengers trying to find reasonable flights for their 2008/9 vacations. It's not likely to get any better any time soon so best to lock in now to anything you can find at a reasonable price and don't miss out by hoping to get a good deal later on.

Accommodation deals will look better and better as the price to get to them continues to rise!

Our situation in the USVI is further complicated by our skyrocketing energy costs with a recent 22% increase only the forerunner to further increases in the next few months, all of which are passed on to the consumer and are already making a trip to the supermarkets a gulping affair! Grab whatever deal you can get now. Cheers!

Connie:

The trip from Philly to Newark can't be more than 1-1/2 to 2 hours. Parking at Newark, in an off-airport facility, is easy and costs about $12./day. (AAA has discounted fees for airport parking if you're a member)

Since you fly out of Philly I would guess that your FF miles and companion ticket are from U.S. Air......sorry I don't know much about their program.

As for Continental, their FF program seems to be pretty good.....I usually get whatever flights I want (if I'm flexible - meaning +/- 3 days).

STT Resident: You're absolutely right. The airfare that I posted is pretty reasonable (IMHO), but it could go up or down. However, one must consider how much farther down it can go....if it were me I'd buy now......so what if the fare went down by $20. 3 months from now....you probably would save more than that by booking your lodging now (before the prices go up by $20./day).

Connie: I know that you're absolutely obsessed with the VIs.........and someday, I feel, you'll be my neighbor....we'll reserve a space for you at the beach.

Also, I just checked....the Continental fare is still available for Jan & Feb....and Mar & Apr (2009).

LOL...Future....

I'm waiting for the husband to just say book it!!!! I can use those FF Miles (60,000), (I'm really nervous that the airlines are going to be pulling thos FF miles and we'll lose them) but that really makes up for ticket I will have to buy. I don't know...hopefully in a couple days I'll be on this board saying "We're going back"!

I'm also going to check Continental.
