Will my state issued drivers license be all I need to travel to and from the Virgin Islands? Or do I also need to bring birth certificate?
If you don't have a passport, CBP advises that you bring a copy of your birth certificate in case you're asked to prove citizenship upon departing the territory. Most of the time the most that's asked for is a state driver's license or some other form of government-issued photographic ID but always best to err on the side of caution. Enjoy a great vacation!
Bring your passport if you have one, in case you wish to take a day trip to the bvi. They require them.
Louisiana DL has worked fine for me for years; no problems with car rentals, or even the single unfortunate accident when I was re-ended by a local back in June.
Agree that DL will probably be enough. But it is possible that upon return to the continental US you will be asked to prove your right to be in the country. That means either a green card, a passport, or a birth certificate and picture ID. CON has the right to ask.
^^^ As already mentioned but here's the official word from CBP - note last sentence of first paragraph:
It's not a big deal. CBP sometimes conducts unannounced exercises where citizenship is checked and if you don't have either passport or copy of birth certificate they simply ask you a few questions to confirm.
Current, valid, drivers license... good to go.
A while back I'd noted what the sign in the St. Thomas airport immigration area said, here you go:
"In order to facilitate the process, please have proof of identity ready for the examining officer. Example of valid identification could be any of the following:
Current, valid
-Driver's License
-Government ID: City, state of federal
-Military ID; military and dependents
-Passport (is preferred, but not mandatory)
Additionally, all non-US citizens will be required to present traveling documents showing evidence of their immigration status. U.S. Customs and Border Protection."
And if a US citizen does NOT carry proof of citizenship (passport or copy of birth certificate) and CBP is conducting an unannounced check, he may be asked a few questions to verify same, which is why CBP recommends carrying that info (see link posted earlier).
