Hello there - I am looking for some feedback on different hotels/villas/guest houses that any of you may have stayed at. We are planning our wedding on St john in Fall 2004 and are trying to decide where to stay. We dont need anything fancy or overpriced like the westin or caneel - just a step above Cinnamon Campground would be great. We will also be having our 3 year old join us there so need a place that allows the little rug rat. All feedback - positive and negative would be great!!
Thanks everyone!

Cassandra,
Just about a year ago my boyfriend and I stayed at Mahogany Tree Villa just up the hill from Cruz Bay. Nice views, close to town but very quiet. MTV is a large house that has been divided in to several apartments for guest use. The units are clean and well appointed, with full kitchens. There is a nice small pool and an honor bar on the premisis. The owners are very friendly and helpful. While we were there, there was a family with young children staying in one of the units so I know you're little guy wouldn't be a problem.
We enjoyed staying there tremendously and would recommend it without hesitation. We paid around $1300 for 7 nights for our 1 bedroom apartment. It had a large living room deck with gas grill, beautiful full kitchen, with all appliances. Upstairs, a large bedroom, queen size bed and bathroom with a huge shower.
Be warned there is a negative review of this place floating around on the internet. I very nearly changed my plans last year when I read it. Instead I called the owners and discussed my concerns, felt reassured and was ultimately glad that I went ahead and stayed there. The complaints in the other review had to do with the need to conserve water (which you have to do no matter where you stay on the island. The only water source is rainwater) and the requirement that the air conditioners be turned off if you're not in your apartment. That didn't seem unreasonable to me but for this couple it was an issue.
Please feel free to email me if you have any other questions. the website for MTV is www.mahoganytreevilla.com

Perfect - I have emailed them for more information. Thank you very much.

Anyone else have other suggestions?

Check out "cruzbayrealty.com". Their "On The Rocks" rental is a great deal at $875 /week during the off season. My wife and I will be returning in May for the 3rd time in 4 years. You'll have to check on their policy regarding your son but I wouldn't expect that to be a problem.

If you want cheap and a step up from a campground, try Concordia ecotents. $85 per night, sleeps five, private showers, and spectacular views. Search these boards and I did a comparison between Maho and Concordia. Also, this is their website: www.maho.org
But, yes - it is an eco resort - you're not in the life of luxury.
We absolutely loved our trip to Concordia and would return in a heartbeat.

Thank you so much Mandy!!! This is exactly what I had in mind. This may be the place - just waiting to here back if they allow young children there.

Do you happen to have any pictures of what the rooms look like?
How were the bugs in there?
What were meal prices like?
Is there alot to do in the nearby town?

Once I find out if they allow children I will probably have more questions for you ; )

This review on epinions that I wrote may help.
No problems with bugs - take repellant with high percentage of DEET. (Can search these boards about DEET)
They allow kids.
Took our own food for breakfast/lunch. Ate out at dinner. About $10 per person for cheap meals.
Not too much to do in Coral Bay. We had a terrific time and would return in a heartbeat!!
