Where can I buy lobster to grill at our villa? I'd rather not spend $22/lb for a lobster at a restaurant, and would really like to find a local fisherman from whom I can buy a few local lobsters. Can this be done in St. John?

I was told that there is bacterium in the water causing fishing to end in the islands. Cruz Bay Watersports told us that this bacteria is killing the coral reefs as well. Are Lobster and shrimp the same as fish...???? My memory could be better, but I am packing to come so I am goofy today, but I think they told that the shrimp does come from the surrounding islands.

On a second note, we went to starfish market and got great steaks and lobster to grill.

Fishing is still fine here in the USVI and BVI. There is a problem with bacteria and the coral reefs but it is a world wide problem and not, unfortunately, confined to the Virgin Islands. Global warming, increased worldwide populations and depletion of natural resources is an extremely unfortunate by product of "progress".

There are still lobster, crabs and many variety of fish available here. Shrimp do come from other locations as our water is not cold enough for them to breed sucessfully.

There are numerous fresh "fish" markets on St. Thomas.

Thanks, I'll check Starfish market, and will consider bringing some seafood back from St. Thomas.

Thanks again for all the replies! 20 days until we leave!

And you can find live lobsters in a tank at the Food Center on the way to Red Hook. They do have fishermen that sell their fish and lobster in Cruz Bay around the area of the Post Office and Nature's Nook.
