When bringing liquor back from the VI, has anyone ran into any problems using the box that the liquor stores pack your booze in. I’m just a little nervous that the baggage handlers will run off with my precious liquids:) Any suggestions on repacking or camouflaging the package?

Hersh:

I would bring my liquor on board as a carry-on. There is no way I would check it. The baggage handlers are too rough with luggage and it will most likely get knocked around in the cargo bay. Just my opinion.

Thank You for your help. I was under the impression that you were not allowed to bring any booze on the plane. Thank Goddness I was incorrect.

One year we checked out Liquor in the checked baggage and had 2 broken bottles out of six. Every since then we have carried it on the plane with us. Boxes are strong and posed no problem. Good luck.

You can bring 80 proof alcohol on the plane, in a box, as yourcarry on. You can NOT take 151 rum, or an equivalent proof, on board as a carry on, as it is too flammable.

Marty

You got that right..... "too flamable". I remember drinking something years ago that had 151 rum in it and lighting it on fire and dropping it in some other form of alcohol before chugging it (does anyone know of a drink like this?..... can't remember).

Wouldn't touch the stuff now. It would probably make good jet fuel.

I pack the box tightly with additional cardboard, bags, whatever, then reinforce/seal it with packing tape except for the top - TSA might need to inspect - and have extra tape at the airport to seal the top when they are finished. I check it as luggage and in 26 trips my sister and I have lost exactly one bottle apiece. We're on the small side and do not want to hold up boarding while we wrestle with our booze (at least in that respect!).

On our most recent trip we brought back nine bottles each (packed some in our luggage) and were honest about it when asked. Nobody seemed to want to do the paperwork to charge us the duty on three bottles of Cruzan rum.

We put the bottles in my rolling carry-on that fits in the overhead bin. Bottles are wrapped in paper. No pain in the arms and back from carrying the boxes. Wheels - what a great invention!

TEAM
I spoke with an agent with American about this issue. She informed me that I could only carry on 1 bottle of booze. However, she stated that I could check as many as 6, but under no circumstances would I be allowed to bring more that 1 1.75ltr on as carry on. Any help would be appreciated. I too am looking forward to bringing back as many bottles as the airline will allow.

Ah, but the problem for smaller folks is the actual lifting into that overhead bin. The one time I tried I held up traffic way too long and nearly took out a couple of folks in the attempt! A kindly gentleman came to our aid, but my opnion is if you can't hanle it yourself you shouldn't bring it on board. I hate it when other people fuss around that way and delay boarding, so I don't want to be a contributor to the problem myself. Stronger, taller people who can hoist that puppy in there without breaking stride don't have this problem, although they often waste time hunting for a space if they are in the last group to board.

Like I said, two broken bottles in a combined 52 trips ain't bad!

We just returned from St. Thomas last June and we brought home 6 bottles of rum in the box. We had no problems getting through customs and had no problem getting it checked. We simply carried it on and put it in the over head...in fact, almost everyone that was on the plane had a box of rum...must have been the party plane.

Hello:

I never heard of such a thing. Get one of those cardboard liquor cartons that holds 6 bottles and has a handle. As long as it fits in the overhead or under your seat (as these do) you should have no problems. I would guess that on our last flight back from USVI (American Airlines) in November at least 50% of the passengers brought booze cartons on as carry-ons.

At last a posting in which I have expertise!!!
We always bring back at least 12 bottles (six each and sometimes an extra or two). We have never been charged a duty and I am honest when asked.
Generally, we bring two of the card box containers as carryon. If you have to make a connecting flight this can be a real pain in the a__. Fortunately, we usually fly direct.
I have checked it with mixed results. If you do check it pack it yourself. One time I had it packed in the liquor store and they put some of the bottles in upside down-not a good idea!!!
American can be a real pain about the liquor. They had one agent in particular who made up her own rules, and she gave us a hassle everytime. I have not seen her lately and have had no problem. You can not bring 151 proof (thank God). But that's a story for a different time.

I am glad to see Bill's response regarding American after reading a previous post that American only allows 1 bottle. We will be flying American this November and I don't want any problems at check in. We flew Delta last year and carried 2 boxes (12 bottles total) on and did not have any problems. Thanks for all the great info on this topic.

American needs to get their act together. Besides changing our departure time from STX by nearly three hours (earlier so part of our group missed all their connections). Besides getting no help from American in STX and SJU,about their screw up, they also said American's policy was to allow no more than 5 litres per person. They group had all their bottles in the cardboard handled boxes. Thankfully some nice passengers that had no booze with them, offered to carry on the 6th bottle for them. I probably will not use American again. Will look at Delta or USAir. But that's another story.

We came back from St. THOMAS in march. We were on American and uNITED and carried on 2 cartons of 6 bottles ea. Both my husband and myself carried 1 ctn. that was packed for us at A.H.Rise. No problem with Airlines, customs or putting it under the seat in front of us on plane.

Thanks Sandcrap. That's the same nonsense the American Agent told me. I was confused, but I don't want to risk having my spirits removed from my possession 🙂
