Are they charging the checked bag fee for the liquor boxes? Please tell me NO!

We flew back from STX on AA on the 18th with 2 boxes of booze. Someone at the security check said something to the wife but no one at AA asked for the fee. I think it goes into effect some time in June. Yes, the box is a checked piece of luggage.
Yes,t's going to pose a big problem for the economy of the USVI. There is an article about it on today's St Thomas Source, our online newspaper.
There's a article in the St Croix Source from this past weekend ( http://www.onepaper.com/stcroixvi/?v=d&i=&s=News:Local&p=1212898194 ) - looks like the government is going to try to get a waiver but as of right now the charge will be in effect unfortunately!!!
The cost for extra bags might actually be a boon to some grocers and restaurants, especially those on St. John. Many folks who bring coolers full of their favorite foods to cook at the villa may think twice about the extra cost for baggage and leave the food at home. They will then either have to shop when they get there or go out to eat.
Looks like American is going to drastically cut it's flights into and out of San Juan starting this September.
