I've read that this is a beautiful beach, but another vi website says to be very careful of "vagrants" (the websites words, not mine). Was wondering if this is still the case, or if this "hidden gem" has become more mainstream and if it would be ok to take my family. Has anyone recently been there? Thank you!

The Magens Bay Authority has taken over the operation of Lindqvist and they have plans to put in restrooms, etc. The dirt road going into Lindqvist was recently paved and security guards are now regularly in the area. The MBA hopes to have the beach (apparently to be renamed "Smith Bay Beach") fully equipped within a year as long as they can obtain the necessary funding by that time but it's open to the public now.

I'm curious to know the origin of the name Lindqvist for this beach. I also wonder why there's a need to change what seems to be a perfectly good, somewhat familiar name.

I may be wrong, but I have a feeling for a long long time coming if you will mention Smith Bay Beach to anyone living on island for a while they are bound to say, "Oh, you mean Lindqvist." I stay at Bluebeard's Beach Club, and mentioning that to an island resident will more often than not have them asking if I mean the Old Limetree.

We were there several times in the last month......there are life guards and police present at the beach......and a portable "john" as well.

It's still not crowded.....but that will end when it becomes more developed.

The Lindqvist family owned the property for years and still own a lot of undeveloped land in Smith Bay.

I agree that the name should stay the same. One of my pet peeves is that the legislature periodically passes motions changing the names of very old-established sites. Limetree, as noted by Gerie, is a good example and I still get confused when someone says they're staying at "Bluebeard's Beach Club" and immediately think "Bluebeard's Castle." Another example is Skyline Drive which became Valdemar Hill Drive and I have to think way more than twice if a visitor uses the new name.

I'm not averse to Lindqvist being "developed" per se. The Magens Bay Authority does a wonderful job and although Lindqvist will indubitably attract more visitors, better that it be busier at times but protected and CLEAN than the garbage-strewn and often crime-ridden wreck it became in recent years. Cheers!

There is an article in the paper this morning stating that the Magens Bay Authority will begin charging $2 per person over 13. It doesn't say when this goes into effect, but I would be prepared starting today. 🙂

The beach has been called that for years since the family owned it however the real name is Smith Bay. They should change the name I think.

At least probably nobody will mis-spell Smith Bay... oh, and I was wrong about the new name, it's apparently to be, "Smith Bay Park."

Daughter reminded me that alot of U's are spelled as V's in Dutch. Makes sense to me because of the Dutch influence in STT. Also, I don't care if people spell St. John with an "S"...we all know what they're talking about. Any other mis-spelling going on? Boy, I have to go back to school I guess.

Hope I spelled everything correctly, but my grammer, or commas may not be in the right place.

I think I need some help:@)!

bobcside: I must be getting old and tired because I don't understand your last post. But thanks for reminding me about beech trees - the old neurons kicked in with some happy memories!
connie - the "influence" on STT is predominantly Danish, not Dutch. The Danish settled the island officially in 1666 and sold it to the US in 1917. Cheers!

There are some that spell it with a u and some with a v. Those that owned the beach use a v. Same pronunciation.

Ron, Thanks alot for the clarification. We can always count on you for an honest, considerate reply.

STT, People are not perfect, excepting you of course, so why not just give them a pass on an occasional typo or mis-spelling. I think we all know what Beach is being referred to here. It truly is a beautiful Beach and the crowds will undoubtedly come. The up side is it may take some stress off the other Beaches. BY the way, when you have time, you might want to chastise the VI-NOW folks about spellin Lindquist wrong, check it out- https://www.vinow.com/stthomas/beaches_stt/beaches3.php, As to not understanding my post, I don't think youre "getting" old. Maybe you can enlighten us on other Beach areas on Island that are called a PARK.. Thanks in advance,

I'm still in the dark where your comments are concerned, bobcside. I don't know of any "Beach areas on Island that are called a PARK." The info on Lindqvist being renamed "Smith Bay Park" came from a recent article in the VI Daily News about the project. Cheers!

STT, I think that part of Bob's post comes from the fact that you correct alot of people on spelling. And that's all I have to say.
