I'm seeking info on the Alberic Lightbourn Family, circa mid 1880's. Specifically Cornelia Adele Lightbourn,my godmother, born apprximately 1878. They lived in Charlotte Amalie. Siblings I know of were: Mary, John, and Alberic Jr. Father Alberic may have owned or edited the local newspaper. Belonged to Church of England.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You, Dolores Mundy

Hi Larry: Thanks for the info. I was able to make contact with Mirriam Murphy Lightbourn and provided her with the information I had concerning her great grandfather John Lightbourn. She and her aunt Dr. Evelyn reviewed the material and provided additional info and comments which were gratefully accepted. Would you mind telling me the connection between the Gumbs and the Lindos families and the Lightbourns? Sy

Hello I am trying to trace my family history to my knowledge my grandfather's name is John Lightbourne he came to this country by way of Ellis Island, from Bermuda who still has his records on file. I would like to know a bit more about him and his trip and his life if possible.. They have records of three I wrote down two of them One came to Ellis Island in 1905 (age 20) and one came in 1906 (age 54). He married Florence Edwards, they had 2 children
Arthur John Lightbourne and Leroy Lightbourne. I would like to know if my father has any remaining relatives still there. Thank you in advance. We spell our name LIGHTBOURNE. Any information would be very helpful.

Hi Eliot: The Lightbourn I was researching was John Nathaniel Lightbourn (aka Jno. N. Lightbourn and Ino N. Lightbourn) who was born in Bermuda in 1847. He came to St. Thomas via a stay in Turks Island and was a printer who eventually owned a newspaper called "Lightbourn's Mail Notes" that he published for about 30 years. He also owned and operated a store on Main Street in St. Thomas where he sold photo supplies and picture postcards that he published himself. By a strange coincidence, he too visited the US via Ellis Island in 1905 but according to Ellis Island records it was for business purposes and not as an immigrant. Lightbourn is a very common name in Bermuda and Bahamas like "Smith" in the U.S. and one has to be careful in reviewing records to see that they have the right person. While it is possible that 'your' John Lightbourne and 'my' John Lightbourn may be distant relatives, I doubt that they were unless one goes way back into the family tree.. The only direct descendants of 'my' John Lightbourn are two persons living in Puerto Rico (See previous notes posted above) and the descendants of Lightbourn's grandson John Earl Tudor Lightbourn b. Oct. 1915 d. Jan 2001 in Clearwater, Florida. To my knowledge there are no direct descendants of John N. Lightbourn living in St. Thomas. Sy

Hello. Sorry I got back so late, my DSL was inoperative, and I lost the site..my parents, the Gumbs family, leased "LA Gracia" store for many years (st. Thomas main street). Mrs. Lindo owned the building and her family, the Lightlournes, inherited after her death. Our families had a business/ social relationship over the years, until my parents gave up the store. My brothers have been in contact with the Lightbournes over the past few years.

See this: http://www.rootsweb.com/~bmuwgw/lightbourngen.htm

I am trying to track down antecedents of Benjamin Lightburn (b. 6/1/1756), and there is a family story of a Joseph Lightburn having been shipwrecked off the coast of Bermuda, losing everything. The story says he spent some time there before coming to Pennsylvania. I've found a Joseph Lightburn (b. about 1795, son of Benjamin) who spent some time serving during the war of 1812, but he seems to be back in Ohio by 1820. So is there another Joseph who ended up in Bermuda? Did that story come from before Benjamin?

I've found some indication that there was a Daniel Stiles who was a government official in Bermuda ...

Thanks to all for your posts!

Hi STT Resident & Sy, see my post of today,6/26/06.Most of this I was told by my godmother, Nanny is what I called her, I did meet Alberic's children in person. The family was well traveled and were expected by their father to always come to Atlantic City where we lived to visit their Aunt Nelia no matter where they were going in U.S. These visits took place circa 1940's & 1950'S when I was a child. Evelyn, the doctor, formally a pharmacist, spent a summer with us in early 50's working at Woolworth's soda fountain. THe last time I saw any of them was in 1966 when Nanny became gravely ill. Alberic Jr. brought his father to A.C. and they stayed in a hotel near hospital until she lasped into a coma and they returned to Puerto Rico. When Nanny died, three weeks later on June 6,1966, Uncle Berry and his son returned to bury Nanny. Does such family devotion still exist? Even though Uncle Berry and Nanny had been separated for more than sixty years the closeness of brother and sister remained strong. I was struck by how very simular they sounded. I did receive a letter from Uncle Berry a few months later but I lost track of it.
More memories-- Nanny received an inheritance from her parents- late 20's/early 30's I think, but lost it all when the banks failed. During 40's/50's many times Uncle Berry would send money

Im sorry I dont have any info on what you are looking for, but I have a strange question, do you have a neice who would have been born in 1966 named debra weiss? My mom passed away when I was 3 and I have a aunt dee, who is my aunt judys best friend, my aunt judy is looking for my aunt dee, I have not seen my aunt dee since being a very small child but my aunt is really missing her best friend (Dee Mundy, ) my moms maiden name was Catherine Mundy and I had a brother who passed away when I was 1 and he was three. Hi all,

I know this is an old thread now but, I am Matthew Lightbourn who is from the UK. I have managed to trace my family back to 1847 and I believe that one of my relatives was from Lancashire, England and went over to Nassau during the gold rush and I can only imagine that it was during the days of slaves and servants so am desperately trying to work out if anyone has traced back to Lightbourn's from the UK.

I have been through this thread and am facinated by what I have read so far. If anyone can shed some light on this from their own searches, I will be very grateful.

From my side, the Lightbourn's didn't only end up in the Bahamas but also in Dunedin in New Zealand, I have more information on that as well but, that is really going back some.

Look forward to hearing from someone soon

Matt
