Hi every one, can anyone tell me how Liberty day is celebrated or if there is a story about the 99 steps?
Tristan,
I can give some info on the steps, they were constructed in mid 1700's by the Danish who preferred street with steps as an easier way to climb the steep hills of Charlotte Amalie. The bricks used in the 99 steps were originally brought from Denmark used as a ballast in the hulls of sailing ships.
Liberty Day or Bull and Bread Day is celebrated in St Croix.
As far as the step streets go. The streets were laid out back in Denmark with no knowledge of the terrain of the towns. Therefore, streets that were intended to be used as streets turned into step streets! You can actually climb step streets from Hospital Line up over Blackbeard's down the Bunker Hill side and up the Catherineberg Hill and then down into Savan on the Fireburn Hill side and up and down Frenchman's hill without having to go back down to main street!
