I'm wondering if anyone else is frustrated by the schedule for the two car barges, which basically makes it impossible to bring a car over to St. John, have a nice dinner, hit a night spot or two, and then come back. The last one leaves at 7:00 which just doesn't cut it. Anyone know why this is? Does the car barge only travel in daylight or something? Because I've got to believe plenty of people would take advantage if it ran later.

The current schedule just makes it hard, in my opinion, to plan a complete day in St. John with some exploration during the day followed by some nightlife. Yes you can take the passenger ferry but then you're forced to rely on taxis and that adds up. I went to Cinnamon Bay and Trunk Bay today and that was $15 for one person, plus $6 for the passenger ferry. If there's two or more people than the car barge definitely makes sense. Plus if you want to do some hikes or explore some of the off the beaten path beaches, or go to the east end, then you really need a car (both to get there and to make sure you have a way to get back).

I know you could stay overnight, or come back for your car the next day, or rent a car on St. John, but I'd still like to have a late car barge.

Anyone share these frustrations?

No.
Once in a blue moon, the Capt. Vic runs a late barge. You have to check their schedule. It usually occurs when there is some sort of show or concert in St. Thomas that people want to go to. Or if you have two sets of keys and ask nicely, they will take your car back and park it up for you until you get back. That's what I do.

I echo your frustrations Carib.
Just 2 weeks ago, we were trying to figure out how to hike Honeymoon and hang out at Trunk, then head back to Cruz for a dinner...all while having the car. It was impossible so we just ended up hiking to Caneel (which actually wasn't bad) and taking a cheap safari back.
Now Ronnie, how likely is is that a New Yorker is going to be able to convince the nice folks on the Capt. Vic to provide such personal service?! smile.

As a resident of STJ, I would love a late ferry.
Trust me on this one.
But I usually take the last one back and it is pretty empty....so i can see why they dont because it wouldnt pay for them.

Brilliant idea, Ronnie. Does asking nicely do it, or would a "crisp greenback" be required too?

By the way, the first program I saw on my new cable-equipped TV was a feature on channel 2 about Villa Fairview. Great looking place and lots of history.
