Hello all you US Virgin Island (St Thomas) newbees. My husband Steve and I will be on our way from the UK on 4 October for two weeks. Also staying at Marriott - Frenchmans Cove first week then Frenchmans Reef the 2nd week. Can't wait ... yeee haaa.

What we wondered is, will a hire car be essential or is local transport/taxi inexpensive and reliable i.e. good bus timetables. I used local buses to get around Barbados on a visit a few years back and it was the ONLY way to travel. Highly amusing experience through the towns. Am hoping that St Thomas is the same ... wadda ya say ????

I think you would be happier to hire car (rent a car - I love English)
Seriously I would consider renting a car at least for part of the time if not all

Public transportation on wheels is expensive.
Ferry system is very reasonable
One of the benefits of your choice will be the ability to jump islands.
There is plenty to do in STT, but sometimes a new adventure awaits in the BVI or ST John

So I would budget for a car - my two cents
Nothing fancy just wheels

Caution the drive on the left in USVI 😉 😉 😀

So what is the pound to the $ these days

Fellow Brit and VERY longtime resident here! Absolutely a hire car - local transportation inexpensive but dreadfully unreliable (a timetable, what's that???) and taxis very expensive (see taxi rates above by clicking on "St Thomas" top of this page and scrolling down to "taxis.")

Do read through all the general information on this website and then start on the forum itself and you'll get a very good overview from a visitor's standpoint. Cheers!

Hello & thank you for the response and my apologies for the delay in acknowledging. As mentioned to the other kind person who posted a reply, we'll get on the tinterweb and see what we can drum up with at least 4 wheels ...lol.

The dollar is gaining speed and we aren't seeing the inflated rate of just a few weeks back. I believe it is running around the $1.80/£1.

As to the driving on the 'wrong side' - we Brits already drive on the wrong side so it'll be home from home for us - aside from the weather that is. At the moment we have webbed feet and rusty tide marks round our ankles and we never leave home without an inflatable ... haaahaaaaa. The summer has been appalling this year, had we not had a couple of weeks in Spain in June we'd be gaga by now. Can't wait to get to the Island - we'll be tired but very happy bunnies. Roll on 4th October.

Yes, you also drive on the left but we drive American vehicles with the steering wheel on the left so you'll have some learning fun - cheers!
