Hi everyone,

Does anyone have contact info and departure/pricing info for kayaking tours on St Thomas? I think I had heard about something in the SE, Estate Nevi? That, or contact for any other outfits would be appreciated. Anything, especially with an ecological or historical intent, or one which also involves other activities (snorkeling, lunch, swimming, etc) are preferable. Thanks-

Marian

I found the tour descriptions that are offered by Virgin Islands Ecotours. They operate their marina in Estate Nadir which is in the East End of St. Thomas. They are the only tour operator that has a permit to interpret the Virgin Island Park System's Inner Mangrove Lagoon Wildlife Sanctuary and Marine Preserve.

There are three tours offered:

The Kayak, Hike & Snorkel Tour is an award winning 2 1/2 hour guided tour. The cost is $65 per adult, $35 for 12 and under. The tour departs at 9 M and 1 pm. Small children sitting with two adults are free. After an amusing briefing where you learn about where you are going in the lagoon, safety and equipment talks and paddling demonstration, you board your two person easy to paddle sit on top kayak and venture out into the Inner lagoon. There will be interpretive stops where you will learn about the mangrove ecosystem and its interdependence on the coral reefs. Whe you arrive to the snorkeling are, you will find a crustal clear shallow lagoon at Long Point (the southern most tip of St. Thoams) where it is connected to Patricia Cay by a long coral and shell rubble barrier. The Caribbean WSea on the South side creates dramatic and picturesque views. Many of the tours have photogrpahers who take hundreds of great photos of the scenes, paddlers, wildlife & arine life and their CDs are available for $35. If they are not on your tour, be sure to bring your camera or grab an underwater camera from VI Ecotours gift shop.
The snorkel area is an easy beach entry and an unusual juvenile marine habitat. It's perfect for beginniners, and experienced divers will find the marine life unusual and intersting as well. Sittings of sting rays, eagle rays, barracudas, grunts, snappers, octopus, sea urchins and upside down jelleyfish are common. The paddle back is about 20 minutes.

There is a longer, more interpretive tour called the Kayak, Hike & Snorkel tour of Cas Cay. It is similar to the previous Kayak & Snorkel tour with an additional 30 minute hike exploring Cas Cay Wildlife Sanctuary. Cas Cay has a mangrove forested area with an unusual hermit crab village, and the trail leads along a coral and shell rubble beach oout to Red Pont where there are unusual volcanic cliffs. At the base of the cliffs there are breathtaking tidal pools and a rare geologic blow hole. The negative ions from the waves splashing on the rocks are enchanting to visitors. The snorkel area is also a juvenile marine habitat, and the nature guide will show you part of a ship wreck where you will see lots of grunts, snappers, squirrel fish, angel fish and look for the eel, pufferfish, octopus and stingrays that live nearby. This tour leaves at 9:30 and 1:30 daily. The price is $75 per adult, and $35 per child.

The nature guides are all very enthusiastic about the ecology, and many of them have specialties and study at the local University of the Virgin Islands.

The Family EcoSnorkel and Pirate Hunt of Cas Cay, a boat, hike & Snorkel guided tour is the third tour that is identical to the Kayak, Hike & Snorkel tour with the exception that the transport to the island of Cas Cay is by inflatable boat instead of kayak. Children love this tour since there is a hermit crab race and also pirate's treasure in a small cave at Red Point. The price for this 3 hour tour is $75 per adult and $45 for children under 12. It departs at 9:30 and 1:30 daily.

Reservations are Required in advance for all tours. Call them at 340.779.2155 or email them at [email protected].
