I would like to know the best places to kayak (calm waters) on several hour trips that can be made without a guide. My husband and I are not novices but have mostly kayaked on rivers with very little whitewater. We are thinking of launching from Maho Bay or Coral Bay. I want to know where to go from each of these places and if there are any other places to kayak that are nice.

What is your definition of nice and when will you be visiting? High season means rougher North island and calmer South while Low season North island is calmer. What are you looking for while kayaking? Whistling Cay just off Maho is a great snorkeling sight not readily reached by land. East Coral Bay has numerous areas of mango wetlands best experienced from kayaks. Let us know what you want and we can narrow it down (or open it up).

Have you been to STJ before? If you have been before you know that the water is usually pretty flat unless the northern swells are up which is mostly a winter months thing. I would say that you might take some guidance from whomever you are renting your kayak through. They would be able to tell you on any given day's water conditions where the best spots might be.

I know I've seen lots of kayaks in the Hurricane Hole area was well as around Caneel and Hawksnest and out to Lovango Cay, also in the Cinnamon and Maho Bay areas and out to Whistling Cay.

I know you can rent kayaks at Cinnamon, Maho and from Crabby's in Coral Bay. I don't know if you can rent them at Caneel if you are not a guest. You might call them and see if that is possible. I know they down guided groups from Caneel.
