I was wondering if it is safe to paddle a kayak totally around Water Island.
Are there rough surf areas that would prevent this?
Thanks
An experienced kayaker in a good ocean style kayak should have no problem most days - certainly going clockwise - will be easier - from East Gregorie channel and west on the South side will be the roughest section and best to be going downwind.
Thanks for the quick response.
We would be renting from the rentals available at Honeymoon Beach. Are those tandem kayaks considered good ocean style kayaks?
Also we would be there at the end of October, so is there a difference in surf conditions at that time?
Thanks again
Surf and wind conditions are flat that time of the year. I don't specifically know about Honeymoon's boats, but if I had to guess they would be tandem sit-on-tops, NOT touring boats.
I wouldn't kayak all the way 'round Water Island. I'm pretty good kayak-er but the swells and wind once you get around the southwestern-most point could get....very interesting. I would be fun kayaking around Flamingo Bay and Honeymoon Beach. I've also seen windsurfers enjoying nice ride around that same area and even out to Flat Rock Cay. Of course, if you're launching on a trip, consider that you'll have to go the distance both coming and going. And, I'm not aware there are kayak rentals on Honeymoon Beach. Have you actually contacted someone there and confirmed they're still doing it? I know there used to be someone renting kayaks off Honeymoon but the govt organization made some policy decisions about small water craft laying about on the beach....as in....no longer permitted to have unattended / inactive water craft sitting near or around the beach. Folks that did offer rental would have to bring the rental craft down to the beach when they had customer requirement. Not sayin' there's no kayak rental. Just sayin'......I'm interested if you can confirm and report back. Thanks!
There are no kayak rentals on Honeymoon Beach. There are a couple of kayaks there, but they belong to property owners who leave them there for their renters to use. There aren't any available for the general public. Sorry to put a damper on your trip.
