Continuing a trip report started earlier in a separate post, day 4 of our trip was a day we’d been looking forward to: sailing the Caribbean! All four of us are big fans of lounging on a catamaran all day, checking out locations we probably wouldn’t otherwise get to. This year, we were hopping aboard the No Shooz.
The day started out with a huge rainstorm in the dawn hours. Craaaaaaap. I was a little worried just b/c it was our biggest day, the one we couldn’t reschedule if it got rained out. But by the time we got up about 7:30, the skies were overcast but the rain had stopped.
On board the No Shooz (with the sun now shining) were Captain Mindy and First Mate Lou, two gals who quickly proved that sailing isn’t just man’s work! These gals knew their stuff and were incredibly hospitable.
We took off for Jost Van Dyke, BVIs, and arrived about an hour and 45 min later, pulling up to the pier by Foxy’s.
After clearing customs, we walked over to Foxy’s for lunch. We gals drank water, the guys a couple beers, and we all had the grouper sandwich. We strolled the gift shop, picking up a tshirt for my nine year old son and a bright yellow tank top for the Hub, which will of course eventually be mine to use as a bathing suit cover up. In fact, I donned it then and there so the Hub would know that I was staking claim. LOL See who’s wearing it in this pic… 😉
A highlight at Foxy’s was Foxy’s black lab strolling around the beach with his teddy bear in his mouth. I am a S-U-C-K-E-R for animals and got the biggest kick out of this sweet thing casually walking around paradise and then laying down and proceeding to pull the stuffing from his bear.
We headed back aboard the No Shooz and sailed 20 minutes over to White Bay and the famous Soggy Dollar Bar. I love this place. The water looks so surreal—like pool water, beautiful aqua blue. Joe, John and I swam ashore—true to form for this bar founded in the same year I was born. With no pier, everyone swims ashore with money in their pockets to buy some drinks and thus: soggy dollars. Lori was a trooper and forewent swimming in order to carry our cameras etc to shore in the dingy, manned by Lou.
At Soggy, we lay in a hammock, played the “ring game” (we stink at it), bought some shirts, and just lounged in the chairs on the beach. The animal lover in me was in luck again. A boat pulled remarkably close to shore had a beautiful, playful pup aboard. He was named Max and was the most striking brindle color. He was a mix breed adopted from a humane society on STT we later learned from the owner. He loved to swim and would alternate hanging out on the back of the boat and swimming around in the waves. If I could’ve figured a way to sneak him home with me, I would’ve.
Too soon it was time to head back to St John. After clearing US customs, we skipped over for a drink at Joe’s Rum Hut--one of the few places the guys could get mojitos--while waiting for Joe’s Barbecue to begin serving again. The names are coincidence; the Rum Hut is at the beach edge and I don't believe serves any food; Joe’s Barbecue stands in the middle of town offering up the best downhome BBQ, which is a real secret on STJ. The only place I’d learned about Joe’s was on the Vinow.com message board. I am sure I never would have stopped here otherwise. But on our last trip, we got food to go from Joe’s and were so blown away that we got it a second time later in the week. So we knew Joe’s would be at least one stop for us this trip. After a drink or two at Joe’s Rum Hut we walked over and placed our order for chicken and ribs (don't strain yourself pouring over the extensive menu--it consists of ribs, chicken or chicken & ribs—LOL). The hubs drove around the block while we waited for the food. Unfortunately we didn’t realize it was going to take 30 minutes. No complaints b/c it’s worth it, but the poor Hubbies must’ve circled the town block 15 times! We eventually got them some beers from Caps Place (Miller Lite: $1 each all day long!) b/c we felt badly for them. LOL Note to all—definitely get ribs from Joe’s but allow 30 minutes. Good food can’t be rushed!
With food in hand, we returned to the Jungle Villa and all you could hear were the zillions of birds and the sounds of lips smacking as we got down to barbecue business. Joe’s did not disappoint.
A round of showers later, phone calls to the kids at home, and we all vegged around the villa for the night, worn out from sun, sea, sailing, and the Soggy Dollar. A great, great day.
Great day you had in the bvis
I too am a huge sucker for any animal just ask Sherri
Cant wait for the rest of the report
Dreamin, i'm loving your trip report and your photos are great!
We know that dog well, we played with him too at Foxy's. I hope you had the opportunity to meet Foxy too..he has lots of stories to tell.
Can't wait for more.
Love Joe's BBQ. Our first time there we couldn't find it, we were standing at the post office looking for a sign LOL, no sign! We could smell it & just followed the wonderful smell to Joe's. A must stop in STJ. Your report & pics are great. Keep it up 🙂
We were there the day before you and I took a picture of the black lab too. He was covered in sand curled up under a picnic table at Foxy's. It made me miss my labs at home. Someday I'd like to take them to see the ocean. I know they would love it. Being from the midwest makes for a long car ride though.
I love your pics. I am working on my trip report and I would love to include photos. Can you tell me what you did? Would I have to upload my pictures to Photobucket or could I use something else? Thanks. KK
Great report! I just love Foxy's Tattoo (I think that's his name). He's so dang sweet! He totally adopted my little man when we arrived on Jost last trip. Followed him like a shadow everywhere. I'm going to take a toy down for him next trip. He's such a cutie!
Pics are gorgeous.
Thanks to all for comments--seems Foxy's pup is popular indeed! I loved him.
KK--funny you would ask about the photos. As you might've seen from my very first trip report, I didn't do it right originally. But I figured it out thru trial and error and once you know what to do, it's very easy.
I uploaded to webshots.com. You do have to upload pics to a website. Photobucket would work, I'm sure, but I am not familiar with how to do it from there.
From webshots, you click the photo you want to post here. With that photo up on webshots page, look to the right and down a bit on the page. There is a box that says "link to this photo." In that box, the last option says "Post in a forum." First select the size you want the pic to appear (just under Link to This Photo are choices: 100 pixels, 200, 425, 500 or 600; mine are 425). Once it adjusts, you will copy the entire url address under "post in a forum" and paste that into your post here where you want it to appear.
Very, very easy. Choose picture you want, choose pixel size you want it, copy url that appears in the box "post in a forum" and paste it into the post as you're creating it. Good luck!
Great report and pics!
Count me in your band of animal lovers (I do rescue and transport here in TX). Was the lab a stray? If so, that's funny that he carries his teddy bear around. We saw so many stray cats. Only one stray dog and it killed me. I wanted to put him in my carry-on. 🙁 Poor little thing.
I'm loving everyone pics! Thanks for sharing!
No worries on this pup, Gari Ann. He is a lab that belongs to Foxy himself. He appeared well loved and well cared for. I'm with you on the animals tho. Seeing them walking around the streets just breaks my heart. In my job, I write a monthly column for a magazine and am working with a rescue agency in ATL to feature a pet of the month up for adoption. I'm hoping my readers (trade pub for trucking) will step up to give these guys homes. The first one I'm featuring is this guy, Cash:
Anyone interested in him, send me PM!
What rescue are you working with? We just got involved with Atlanta Dog Squad and adopted a 2 and 1/2 year old black lab. Currently she is chewing up the second pad I bought her in two weeks. 🙂 She has toys and bones to chew, but I guess it isn't the same as pulling stuffing out of a pad.
Cash is adorable.

My cousin loved Foxy's dog so much, that when he went home and got a new dog, he named her Taboo!

I'm working with LAP - Lifeline Animal Project. We adopted a beagle from the gal 2 years ago and he is the biggest joy. Here he is:
As much as we love Teddy, I thought if I could do something to help get more great dogs into homes, I'd do it. I'm hoping someone will fall in love with the sight of Cash and want to give him a home. Anybody? Anyone?? 😉
You want to give up TeddY????????
Thanks for the info on Foxy's dog! 😉
Great dog pics.
OT: I'll post Cash's pic and info (PM me his info) up on the rescue transport boards I'm on! It may help..plus he's so cute!
No way, Connie! Laughed when I saw your post. He is the biggest ball of love you could meet. 50 lbs, doesn't know it and wants to be IN-YOUR-LAP. Oh my gosh, he's awesome. My husband's shadow. I do have another Beagle that is up for adoption that the gal at the organization says is just like Teddy. A female named Betsy. Interested??
Dreaming of STT Thanks for the picture help. I printed it out and will give it a try. I am heading out of town tomorrow and will play with it when I return.
All this talk about dogs is killing me. I would have 100 if my husband would keep me. We have 2 Choc. labs now. Just had to have our old girl put down 4 weeks ago. It killed us! When I learn how to post a picture I'll post one of our 100 pound "puppies."
