I am going to be sailing around the Virgin Islands in June and am wondering what, if any, the surf is like. Is it worth bringing a board. From CA.

I have never seen a surf in the VI. There are barely any waves at all...except for certain beaches...... still not enough for a board. The water is very calm.

Hello SurferBob,

Surf "season" here is from around November to May where waves can sometimes average 6 to 8 feet on a good day at the surf spots like Hull Bay and Caret Bay on St. Thomas or Reef Bay on St. John. The rest of the year however its pretty much flat. The surfing in the VI is all reef break there is no beach break. Most avid surfers in the VI would say absolutely bring your board if you are visiting during the "season". But keep in mind your board will get damaged, fin broken or even cracked: the surfers I have spoken to say that their board always gets damaged a little to a lot when they fly with it and the airline isn't responsiable and charge a fee for the board as baggage. Thats for the USVI.

In the BVI they have a surf compeition. I think its called the Red Stripe Surf Series and it last a few days, usually in February. Tortola's North Shore is where the surf action is and Apple Bay, Cane Garden Bay and Josiah Bay are the good spots you hear about.

Not sure its worth it for June. If we get waves in July-Oct time its when a tropical storm or hurricane is in the area churning up the seas and the air currents and yes the surfers get out there - even Magens Bay (a lake calm beach) gets huge waves when there are storms passing through and dozens of surfers will head down. However storms are an exception... otherwise expect flat seas.

You might try Kite Boarding as an alternative.
