Getting ready to leave for our first trip to STT this weekend, and I am a little concerned. It looks like there hasn't been a drop of rain in the month of June, and it is supposed to rain every day we are there! Is there a storm moving that way, or will it most likely be pop up storms that won't "ruin" the day? I can deal with it, just trying to prepare myself (and my wife) on what to expect. Any insider info on the weather forecast would be great!
Where can I get a schedule of the cruise ships coming in? Would like to plan to go to STJ on the days there are a bunch of ships in port.
If I want to take some scenic hikes with the wife to some more private beach areas, where can I get a local hiking trail map? Is my best bet going to be STJ for this or are there some good trails on STT as well?
Lastly: Staying at the MorningStar beachfront properties. Any feedback or suggestions, and where is the nearest bar that is worth going to? Is there a bar at MorningStar Beach?
Thanks to anyone that has feedback...
EJ
Hertz is the only rental company that does not allow vehicles to STJ!
I always say that after a night of drinkin' is the ONLY way to assure you will drive on "the wrong side of the road"! lol!
Actually, on a night that you really want to get loaded (to put it nicely), take a taxi that night!
EJ, we have a photographer living here with your name, I was wondering why HE was posting about the weather!!!!
My fiance's sister works at the Bar on the property you are staying at. Kelly. Be sure to say "hello"! I'm not sure if she is down at the beach bar or up at the pool bar!
Thanks Sherri! I did find out that Hertz was the one to stay away from. Going with Budget. I guess if I have to leave the jeep in RH, I could taxi back and water ferrry back over in the morn to grab it.
I will say hi to Kelly, as I am sure I will be visiting all of the Marriott bars frequently. That brings up another question that you may be able to answer for me....
My wife and I are in a debate about attire for our evening meals. I did not envision being around the hotel for very much of the trip, as we will be going to STJ for 3 or 4 days to hike and beach. My wife is bringing some pretty nice threads for dinner, and advised me that I should be doing the same. When I think of this vacation, I think about hiking and snorkeling all day; changning clothes out of my back pack; eating some seafood; and drinking some rum. We just got married about 6 mos ago, so I am still learning every day. She enivisions us making the trip all the way back to the hotel to get showered and dressed so that we can better set the mood for romance. MY question is: If we are planning to dine at some fine restaurants several evenings, should I be thinking slacks, or will shorts, sandals and a linen short do??? (In my eyes I could wear this and be comfortable, and she can still wear a dress) My main concerns are making her happy, dressing appropriately, and packing as little luggage as possible!
Thanks for any advice you, or anybody out there can give me on this one!
Thanks!
EJ
Usually I always side with the wife when it comes to fashion, but in the case I will have to take yours! The first time I went to the VI's I brought many, many cute little dresses & coordinating heels and jewelry. By the end of the the trip I had worn the same pair of shorts for 4 days since it was the only comfortable thing I had, along with my flip-flops for the beach! A few of the "nicer", "romantic" restaurants may require a nicer pair of shorts (or capris for the ladies) and a nice polo or linen shirt, but dress slacks would be a tad much! My opinion.....
Plus the heat/humidity will make dress clothes WAY too uncomfortable! The "island" dress code is casual, comfortable and cool!
THank you LLBL. My wife is sitting here with me, and you really simplified the plan. Shorts it is! : )
EJ
EJ,
I have been to STT just the one time back in April so I'm no expert, but unless you plan on dining in a more upscale restaurant, shorts and sandles are fine. From what I saw, no where in Red Hook did you need to wear a dress. If she wants to wear a sundress, she wouldn't look out of place, but shorts and tanks, or an "island" shirt (what I call the flowered "Hawaiian" shirts) is all you need. You will see people dressed every way, but I didn't see any men dressed up too much! Your wife will find out she's waaaaaay overpacked! We knew this ahead of time, and STILL overpacked! I took 5 pair of sandles/flipflops - needed like 2! one for beach, one for dinner.
My first impression of the VI's is that it is for those who prefer not dressing up, who prefer it more relaxed. Maybe your wife has been to other caribbean islands where dressing up for dinner is kind of expected (where its more expensive to stay on those islands) but STT is really relaxed. and STJ even more so. (not that STT is a cheap place to visit!) anyhow - next time (hoping there will BE a next time) I will only bring a carry-on with nothing but shorts, tanks/tees and swimsuits!
anyway - if you've been married for 6 months, you should be learning by now to just go with whatever she says and keep your mouth shut! 🙂
LOL thank you so much for the advice. I love it when I'm right! : ) Just kidding, she is sitting here with me. Thank you though, now we know (that I am right). : )
EJ
Didn't mean to spawn an argument!! I'm sure your lovely wife will look equally lovely in shorts, slip-slops, sand on skin, and wind-swept hair as she does all "gussied" up! Believe me, I'm a girly-girl and LOVE to be on the side of over-dressed. In the VI's though, my need to be COOL outweighs fashion (which says a lot about the heat/humidity). I've said it before, when momma gets hot she turns into CUJO MOM (growl)!
Oops, meant flip-flops......not slip-slops! That's what I wear when I'm drinking! Is it 5:00 yet ? 🙂
slip slops!! "I wanna wear slip-slops for the rest of my life." 😀
Ha ha!!I From now on, I'm going to call them slip-slops if i am wearing them after 5pm !!
EJ & wife,
Been there, done that. One suit case with flip flops, jeweled ones if she wants to dress up, 2 swim suits, 1 sun dress, a few tank tops and shorts. It's warm, humid and you will be sticky most of the time. The romance is in wearing less and enjoying each other more!
But like previous post says, she knows best!
Have a wonderful time and enjoy that beautiful blue water!
EJ & Wife,
P.S. Hope to see a trip report when you return 🙂 Relax and enjoy!
Can you believe I brought a curling iron with me?! I think I also brought a flat iron. IMagine that! LOL My hair was in a hat or a pony tail the entire time. I did use my irons before going to the airport. :b
We just got back today. We wore casual clothes. No dresses. I wore one nice outfit the whole time. It was the first night there. I wished I would have dressed more casual. I was warm and would have been so much more comfortable in my nice shorts.
The weather was great. We had a few hazy days. The only rain we had was earlier in the morning. It never interfered with our outside plans.
Enjoy! It is such a great place to be. Don't be in a hurry. Just relax and enjoy your time there. It goes so fast! I closed my eyes all the way home just to relive our trip.
Thanks for the feedback KK i am wide awake at 3a waiting to go to the airport. : )
Safe travels, EJ! You must be on your way now.
Sheeesh - sure a a lot of folks from this board going down lately and in days to come.
Blu...i see that you're going in 1 day!!!!!!!!! I really wish I could be down there.
It's really so strange that as soon as people get back from the islands, they want to go back. I think of going all the time.
1 day, 9 hrs, 56 mins, 33 seconds....
But who is counting?
