Hi All -
For anyone who's taken the ferry over to JVD from STJ for just the day, do you have any particular advice or suggestions? For example, is it worth bringing snorkel gear?

I assume that when you arrive on the ferry and clear customs/immigration, you can get a taxi to take you whereever. And probably heading to Foxy's is the default choice... Are there other must do activities that can be fit in to the few hours of on-island time, before returning the to ferry to come back to STJ? Or, are there places to go better than Foxy's (hard to imagine, I'm sure!!)

Thanks for any insight you all have. I so enjoy reading comments on this board!!
Dave

Hi Dave,

How 'bout those red sox!!! The snorkeling there is pretty good. There is another place other than Foxy's, the Soggy Doller, but most people go to Foxy's for...well Foxy! Good food and a shop that sell Foxy T-Shirts. What you might want to do is look in to a snorkel tour out of St. John, have lunch at Foxy's (I don't think that requires a Customs stop, but I defer to others on this) w/ snoreling stops on the way back. There is some really good snorkeling around the Islands between St. John and JVD. If there is other significant stuff to do on JVD I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks Wes, that might be a good way to go too. We are way into snorkeling, that's for sure!

17 days and counting...

I am also interested in taking the ferry to JVD for the day. We want to have lunch at Foxy's of course, but what could a typical day on Jost include? How far and expensive in cab fare is it to Foxy's? Also, what else is there to do. I assume Foxy's is on a great beach. We are not that into shopping, can do that at home.

I don't want to get too deep into this because the only thing I have ever done on JVD is go to Foxy's (a couple of times) and Soggy Dollar (once). And again I defer to others but I don't think JVD warrants a whole day. If Foxy is not there it's like just going to a beachfront bar/restaurant. Dave if you are into snorkeling then you are not that far away from scuba. This is what I plan to do one day with my family this summer. I believe that if you snorkel properly you can see about 80% of what you can see doing a scuba dive. That said that other 20% can be pretty astounding! We have contacted a dive operator on St. John http://www.6paqscuba.com/ We chose this company because they specialize in small groups, (no more than 6), fast boat (you can get to more places). We will do two dives (one at the Rhone, an incredible wreck!). We will have lunch at the Willie T. (a 1916 ship converted into a resaurant) in the middle of Norman Bay, Snorkle the "caves" (cool) and the "Indians" (great spot) stop by Foxy's for a cocktail on the way back and snorkle at Thatch Cay before returning to Cruz Bay. To me this is the most bang for the buck! Deb, you should consider some variation of this as well. Taking the Ferry to JVD, Customs (fees that will well exceed the cost of lunch), taxi to Foxy's, in my opinion is a bridge too far.

This doesn't really change my opinion much but hope it helps...

Wes,

My understanding is that the cost of customs in included in the ferry fee. That is what Islander told me.

He would know. But I still think the fee (wherever they collect it)will be more than lunch. And in spite of the link in my last post, I just don't think JVD warrants a whole day.

Foxy's is about 100 yards from the Customs and Immigration building on Great Harbour, no taxi needed. If you want to go to White Bay and visit the Soggy Dollar Bar or Ivan's Local Flavour, and if you don't want to take about a 20 minute hike, you will need to take a taxi. I think you could easily spend a day on Jost if you are into liming!
