I will be in St Thomas for a few days beginning Oct. 4. I want to explore St Johns and plan on seeing the sights on St Thomas. Should I plan on get a rental car or plan on taking a taxi everywhere?
Any suggetions on where to rent a car/jeep. Cost is an issue.
Thanks
Don
If you want to explore you need your own trasportation. Many of the rental companies will not allow you to take a vehicle over to St. John so you need to check that out. We have never rented a Jeep, although it looks like fun, as we opt for the ability to lock things in the trunk and my wife likes the airconditioner (I keep my window open as I don't). I don't think my wife would enjoy the Jeeps as they do not have air. If you are doing any real exploring than the taxis will run into some real cash. We have always used Dependable Car Rental. They were refered to us by a friend that goes to St. Thomas a few times a year. It is a family run operation and they have always gone the extra mile for us even when I messed up my reservation. We have always been able to travel anywhere we wanted to go in a car rather than a Jeep but I'm sure there are places that would really put a car to the test. One draw back to the car is when you get on the ferry you must back on slowly and at an angle so that one rear tire goes on the ramp at a time (some of the ferries have a sizable drop to the ramp). The same holds true for departing the ferry (the key word is SLOWLY). Dependable has a web site and they have an 800 number listed on it. Their regular phone is 340-774-2253. If you reserve with them you simply call their local number when you land (before getting your suitcases) and they will be there to pick you up within a few minutes. Tell them Rick & Deb from NH say hello and we will see them next year.
