Wanted: One soft top Jeep for mid January for our trip on St. John. Have exhausted the internet list of Jeep/Car Rentals.
Thought about renting in St. Thomas and transporting car on ferry.
If lodging on St. John is there really a $1,000 fine to rent a car from St. Thomas? Any suggestions on how to continue jeep search?

Don't understand when you say you have, "exhausted the internet list of Jeep/Car Rentals."

Yes, you can rent a vehicle (including Jeeps) on STT and transport them over to STJ on the car barge with the exception of Hertz which doesn't allow their vehicles to be taken over there. The $1,000 fine you refer to may be the fine that Hertz can impose upon you if you buck their rules (and I believe that that's not only written into their contract but some of the car barge operators won't let you on the ferry if you're driving a Hertz vehicle.)

There are plenty of rental agencies on STT - check out the local telephone book's Yellow Pages for a long list (www.viphonebook.com) and also use the search engine on this forum for the pros and cons of the various rental agencies from visitors' perspectives. There are also several car rental agencies on STJ but not every business here is on the internet either! Cheers and good luck with your planning!

Snoppy, not knowing which ones you already contacted on St. John here is a list. I think it covers all the car rentals on St. John. Are the ones you contacted booked or is there some other issue; for example age (most car rentals on St. John if not all do not rent to drivers under 25)?

Let us know if you find something, or not and need car rental agencies on St. Thomas. Good Luck.

We used Dependable on STT this past October. It was perfect. Island time as soon as you got off of the plane. The "soft top" Jeep might be an issue, because most rental agencies don't allow you to drive topless.8-)
Any sudden rain could do some damage to the vehicles.
Just a thought.

You most likely aren't going to find a soft top Jeep on STJ for rent, because you can't remove the top. The only ones that belonged to the rental agencies that I saw last week were hard tops.

You can rent from most of the agencies on STT (not Hertz as previously mentioned) and take your car to STJ. You cannot ever take a STJ rental car to STT. The ferry operators will not usually let you, and if you do get on, they will call the car company and you'll be fined $1,000.

Islander's list looks pretty good. I'd just start at the top and work my way down, keeping in mind that a soft-top Jeep would be a very rare find, and you are traveling in the height of season!
