Ginger:

Buy J. Buffet's Greatist Hits. At a minimum it should have his signature song "Margartitaville" as well as "Cheeseburger in Paradise", "Changes in Latitude", "Boat Drinks", and "Volcano".

Personally I would describe his sound as a fusion of folk, country, and rock and roll with an island flair. Buy his CD and pretty soon we will be calling you a "Parrot Head". Enjoy!

If you really want to get a good feel for who Jimmy is, pick up his book, A Pirate Looks at 50.

Songs You Know by Heart (greatest Hits) is a good start, but there's so much more.

Then, pop open a beer or fix up a rum drink, put a CD in and Waste Away Again

As a lifelong Parrothead, I must say that "Songs you know by heart" is my least favorite Buffett CD. By far the best cd's are his older live ones, such as "You had to be there" recorded in the late 70's at the Fox theatre in Atlanta - when he's drunk as hell. "Feeding Frenzy" is another great one.

I do agree with reading Pirate looks at Fifty though. Also, you need to read Herman Wouk's Don't Stop the Carnival (regarded as the island Bible), which was turned into a play that JB wrote the music for. And Michner's 'Caribbean', albeit a long read, provides the complete history of the Caribbean.

I'm still trying to gather how someone has no idea who Jimmy Buffett is! Especially someone who frequents the Caribbean. Unfathomable, actually. Enjoy the book...it's fun.

Wow, lots of great comments. But a little advise if I can to folks like prom-guy, mix a boat drink, relax & enjoy the music.
Got back from STX about 2 1/2 weeks ago & am still there in my mind & heart. It is cold & snowing here in Montana, but I am OK. My wife & I were just out in the hot tub with a boat drink listening to Jimmy & all is right in the world for us. It takes us back to the Caribbean every time. A little (ok a little more than a little) Cruzan Rum, some OJ/Cranberry, the stars here in Big Sky country & a fine cigar I picked up at Steele's Smokes & Sweets and I can change my Lattitute back to Cane Bay or the boardwalk at Christiansted & the Brew Pub talking with Gary watchin' the crab races. I have been lucky to be able to get back about every 6 months & am counting the days until I can get back to Paradise. Jimmy & Kenny help me through the tough days at work & I for one am glad they do the music they do!!!

I guess these other guys are okay, but there's nothing more STJ than Inner Visions. They're a good local reggae band. We first saw them at Fred's on our first trip to STJ in the mid-80s. Some of the same guys are still in the band and now have been joined by their sons. They tour part of the year, but usually play in the islands in winter. If they're playing when we're there, I won't miss seeing them for anything.

Promoguy needs no advise when it comes to music.....now you want some good sounds and no boat drink but good beer or bourbon (Makers Mark) you get to listen to:

Clapton, ZZ Top, Robert Randolph, Santana, Buddy Guy.

That's the kind of music promoguy listens to down here in SoCal.

No snow, no shovels, no problem!!!

Well Ginger, if you love the Beatles you would have loved the Paul Mcartney concert I went to last night. Damn, that guy gets better with age. Lots of good stuff off his new CD.

I'll say it again...the book is really a great read. I find myself picking it up every 6 months or so, and am constantly referring back to passages in other things I write and in how I look at life (Deep stuff...I know)

Heck...if you go to STJ and stay at Peace O'Heaven (formerly Pocket Money), I left a Buffett CD on the rack. It was a compilation that I made that best fit my vacation to the USVI.

Starts with Changes in Attitudes
Ends with Coast is Clear.

Hits some great songs along the way.

To any fan who knows the full body of work: Nothing beats listening to Creola while watching the sun set over STT. Just a great song for a great setting.

And..Chesny is Satan.

I just got his book "A Salty Piece of Land" to read while I'm in STJ in March. I know it's a long time away, but I saw it cheap at Costco and picked it up. I'm hoping it'll be a good read while there.

crickett : )

Noone could be Satan who loves the islands & it sound like Kenny just might love the islands like the rest of us do.
Ain't defending him, just sayin' maybe the island bring us all to a good place (that might be goegraphical or in the heart) & that is a good thing no matter where we are from or what we do.
