Could not help but notice December 1 came and went without confirming the gloom-and-doom of the Hurricane forcasters for the second year in a row! YIPEE!

Awoke this morning to a coating of snow while nieghbors to the west and north got a whole lot more ... news reports flights all screwed up everywhere because of a generous dumping of that cold white stuff! It's 13 here with the windchill! ... BAH HUMBUG! ...

But it is CARIBBEAN TIME ... like the very old cartoon that hangs on my refrigerator for the past zillion years picturing a couple, with snow falling outside the window and a sun lap aimed at them sitting on beach chairs and in bathing suits in their living room. The caption : " I still want to go to the Virgin Islands!"

It's freezing and I have to go scrape ice off the windshield and have not a clue where my gloves are much less a hat! . Can't help but remember that the week after T'day was always the first trek of the winter and I can't describe the envy I have now for those who are enjoying warm and wonderful! This post should be in green!

Now I feel better ... until I go outside!

cshell: WIth all due respect, Dr Grey and the forecasters at Colorado State on December 8, 2006 predicted the following: 14 named named storms (they were correct), 7 hurricanes (there were 5) and 3 intense hurricanes (there were 2.) This prediction came 6 months before the season started and was adjusted every month for local changes in the global trends. They do not predict where these storms are going to be, and fortunately this year many were fish storms, however, there are people in the Yucatan, Central America and Haiti who were affected.

I have the greatest respect for the scientists who study our climate, make models and review their accuaracy every year. To say that their projections were "gloom and doom" and "unconfirmed" is not completely accurate. There are people who died in tropical stroms who could use even more accuate information. Thank you to the scientists who strive to give those of us in the zone a more accurate picture every year of what is in store.

Sorry, cshell, I'll get back off my soapbox. And sorry about that "snow" stuff...Must be global warming! 😉

Must say I was being a bit selfish but I was referring to the predictions by the local yokels who had dire predictions for the NE who had NYC sinking and seemed to raise a red alert at the mere possibility of a Nor'Easter . I was celebrating the escape from nature's wrath in the NE and Vi's. Of course Prof. Grey is well known and respected and his predictions, adjusted monthly, are quickly forgotten by me once announced. I guess I'd pay better attention to him and others when how big , when and where becomes predicitable and I do pay attention to the people who actually chart the storms daily. There were some areas hard hit as there were those devestated by fire, by snow storms or whatever nature throws our way and I did not intend to mimimize their pain, suffering or loss.

Pardon me for my momentary lapse of mind when I saw the white stuff coming down and continuing to do so.

I always wanted to be a teevee weather person - a very comfortable salary and no accountability!

I suppose the appropriate punishment would be to go out and make a snow angel or forgo my next trip to the VI ....
Just wish my soapobox were located where yours is!

A couple of interesting articles on this subject.

http://www.local6.com/news/14730306/detail.html

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,196513,00.html

http://www.miamiherald.com/418/story/323346.html

As you might have quessed I am a skeptic on this issue. I can't imagine a hurricane forcaster will make a "below average year" prediction for fear of contributing to the public letting it's guard down (talk about a lawsuit).
