*we are coming to St. Thomas May 20-27, and would like to rent a car, but were told that our car insurance won't cover us there. It seems like it's going to cost big bucks to use Thrifty's insurance that they offer...more than the rental itself! I was wondering what you'd suggest we do. Should we take a taxi from the airport to Bluebeard's Castle then rent scooters for the week, or should we definitely go with the car? If we do the car, do you know of any other way around the insurance thing? It says on their website that they check to make sure you are covered by insurance and you need to show proof. Is that true?
Please Help! I will be very grateful.
Why will your insurance not cover you in the USVI? I would check with my carrier. We used State Farm when we lived on the continent and were always covered on STX.
No they don't check at all, but I have never rented from Thrifty here, only Budget and Dependable. Sometimes using a credit card will cover you, but this is the US so you should be covered with your regualr insurance. Just drive slowly and you should be fine. You can't drive much faster that 30 mph anyway so stay left, stay slow, and stay sober.
Thanks guys...I did call my agent today and it turns out that I AM covered...some new underwriter told my agent the wrong info. I'm all set! BTW, I got the best deal on a rental car at Thrifty.
Perhaps your insurance company thought you were leaving to good old USA. GEICO has always covered us when we rent from Dependable Car Rental.
