My wife and I are going to be visiting St Thomas in Jan. 2009.We are interested in hiring a boat with captain to do a day trip to Jost Van Dyke and Tortola. We will be in C.Amalie but I understand that most charters leave from Red Hook.Does anyone have a recommendation for a boat or charter service? We just want to have some fun and visit some of the other area islands.

We've used the Stormy Petrol several times and have always been happy. Their telephone number is (340) 775-7990.

Have a great trip!

Molly

You can go one one of the pre-determined trips, or you could rent a boat on your own with a captain and do your own thing...or, if I'm available, you could rent the boat and I'll captain it for free for you, with a first mate, taking you wherever you wanna go....I only do it so I can get out on the water every weekend without having to pay for the boat....people like using me cuz I'm free and I've been doing it a long time....

Bella: I would suggest that when you rent the boat you ask for a LICENSED captain. All of the companies at American Yacht Harbor (Sea and Ski, Nauti Nymph, etc.) will have a list.

EE, what do you have against someone doing it for free instead of charging them? I've got more time on the water here than more than half the captains do, if safety was your concern.....

Marty: You need a captain's license to take people boating for hire. It hasn't anything to do with your experience.

Liability Marty. It's liability ($$). But, if you're not charging them to do the service then it wouldn't be so straightforward - in the unlikely event that something terribly unforeseen happened - for them to sue damages, but not impossible. I can't stand it that I'm even talking about liability and lawsuits, etc. but such is the world we live in.

EE, if you're doing it for FREE, then it isn't 'for hire'..check your CG Regs...perfectly legal, been doing it for ten years here (I checked with the Coast Guard before I started doing it and they gave me a thumbs up) And, in the ten years I've been doing it, I've not had one complaint, accident, or unhappy tourist, so I'll keep doing it and keep having a blast! Met some great people this way and made some very good friends, too.

Marty: I don't want to argue with you. Taking friends out on a boat is a different thing than hanging around in an Internet chat room and looking for people who might be willing to pay your way for a day on the sea. I still believe that folks should get a licensed captain.

How is it 'paying my way'? It's more like being invited to go with friends and not paying cuz I'm doing all the work and taking the responsibility (which includes liability) by putting the boat in my name as the captain. Just because you 'believe' differently than the law allows, doesn't make it right. If I 'believed' robbing banks was OK, would that give me the right go do it? Of course not!

We both joined this board over three years ago and you've made more than 300 MORE posts than I have, so I wouldn't call my spending ten minutes a day helping people with their questions on this board 'hanging out in an Internet chat room and looking for people who might be willing to pay your way" I'm REPLYING to a post, not trolling for them! It's called bartering....I offer them something and they offer me something in return, if we both agree on it beforehand.

You say that you don't want to argue, but your post doesn't ring true with that. I'm allowed my beliefs, you are allowed yours and we BOTH have to honor the laws of our Territory. You've negated/disagreed with several of my posts in the past 3 years, and that's OK, as we are all allowed our 'opinions'. Just because your 'beliefs' run contrary to the laws here, however, doesn't mean we that can FOLLOW our beliefs or impinge them upon others. Freedom is great, ain't it?

No hard feelings, 'K?

Marty, you're right. I checked with the husband - my resident Captain who knows more about these things than I will ever know - and he absolutely backed you up on the "No charge? FREE? No problem".
