No, I'm not bailing on STJ, can't wait for our next trip BUT- I just came into a small, very unexpected chunk of money and hubbie suggested taking a vacation with some of it for a week or less to another island and "save" our beloved STJ for another time. So I'm wondering what else is out there that may be almost as interesting if you're an STJ kind of person? We'd be flying from Boston, have already been to St. Martin and Jamaica, no interest in Puerto Rico. Any suggestions for funky islands with affordable, low-key accomodations. Size doesn't matter (in this case). Thanks!

Don't rule out Puerta Rico. The island of Culebra is still in it;s infancy. Go to Faminco Beach resort and enjoy one the top 10 beaches in the world. Very laid back. Hard to get to, but worth the time. Our son was married there over Christmas.

I agree with Blue
You should try The Grenadines or St. Lucia both very beautiful
I also was told by many that Belize has some really good snorkeling
Good Luck with whatever you all decide and i know youll have fun no matter what

This is interesting!
My thoughts:
Culebra- Excellent destination and know people who go every Christmas and they love it. So close to STT and I have never been! Got to change that!!! It is a wonderful Gem from all I have heard and never a bad word!
Barbados- was there on a cruise and knew that it was an Island where I could also live! I enjoyed it and was my favorite Island on our cruise (other than STT where we stayed on the ship as we live here)!
Aruba- Spent a summer there and went a couple of other times as my X worked there for 2 and a half years! I was one of those who hated it! Flat, and as said above - Deserty, the sand at the beach seemed a little mucky to me (unlike ours). No view really unless you are in a hotel ON the beach, FACING the beach! NO green to speak of! Left early, couldn't wait to get back to STT where there are hills with views and GREEN! 🙂
Wherever the wind takes you, Enjoy and sit back and relax!

Kay has resurected a year old thread. I think they may have been there and back by now!

Also consider STX. If you just like beach lounging, you'd like it. The snorkeling isn't like STJ. I wrote a long trip report July of 2006 on this site comparing the two.

Belize is neat. More like the BVI with not to much to do on the cays. We went out snorkeling on either Tobacco or Southwater in April 2006. For our wedding anniversary we did a week long jungle adventure with one day of snorkeling. See http://www.belizeforum.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi for good information on Belize. It's almost as good as this site.
