I am planning a move to the Virgin Islands. More than likely St. Croix. I am a painter ( oil painter ) and I was wondering about the art scene on the islands. I have read a little about some local artists, but haven't found a whole lot. I also dabble in tattooing. I have heard that there was a tattoo shop on St. John, I believe? What about the other two islands?

Thanks so much!
Sarah

There's a large art community on all the islands, and the "Art Fusion" magazine would be the best way for you to find out who's doing what where. PM me and I'll mail you one if it's not online. There are several galleries on St Thomas and St Croix.

The art community on St Thomas has started something new this month, Savor, which is a collaboration with the art galleries and restaurants for Thursday evenings.

There's also a Caribbean art museum in Frederiksted on St Croix.

Maho Camp Resort (that's not the official name, but it's Maho something) on St John offers art classes during season for their guests.

St John has a School of the Arts that offers classes mostly for school children, but also has workshops for adults. They have a website.

I think some of the artists are selling their things on etsy.com. I did a search for Virgin Islands and a few items showed up.

There are also several stores, in addition to the art galleries, that sell local art prints and cards. The A.H. Riise Print Gallery in town on Main Street is the most popular.

There are at least two tatoo shops that I know of on St Thomas - both are in Havensight where most of the cruise ships dock.

Thanks so much! I am going to look up the Art Fusion. Most of my paintings are oil paintings of children, large glassy eyes...faces taking up the entire canvas. I figure I can throw some caribbean feel in them if needed. =0) I should have a website up before I even make that move there so I figure that will help.

So there is one tattoo shop on St. Croix? Any idea if the owner is the only artist working there? I'm wondering what the tattoo business is even like on St. Croix. I am guessing I may have to travel to the other islands to get a little more business....

Tillett Gardens on St.Thomas is rich in art work and artisans. Located on the east end of the island. My candle shop is next to Parstarkle theater and other shops that make local products and gifts.

I'm pretty sure this is only tattoo shop on STX, and Jesse is the only artist I've seen there. He seems to do real well. A couple of friends have gone back home with STX ink that they love. Stx has several good real estate offices. www.gotostcroix.com will give you links. I've recently used Coldwell. You need to visit and check it out for yourself.

Thanks Liz

Yeah, I have been to the site and looked at a few different realtors. I am planning a trip there within the year....and I am planning on renting before buying anyways when I do finally make the big move. So do you live on the islands or states?

I figure tattooing will be something I do when I get a request for it. Didn't really plan on there being a steady flow of people wanting ink. Or I thought about just traveling to the other islands that may get a little more business. Who knows...I guess I'll just have to see how it goes. =0)

Hello Sarah,

Just a quick note in case you haven't clicked over to our other site yet, its for relocating and living in the U.S. Virgin Islands. It has its own message board with related discussion. Check it out at http://www.vimovingcenter.com/.

Sarah,

What an exciting time!!! It's a big move, but one I'm thrilled to have made a little over 5 years ago. I moved from Colorado to St. Croix and LOVE it. Best of luck
