Hello,

We are planning on marrying and honeymooning on STX, April 29-May 15 of 2005. We were told by The Buccaneer that the Iron Man Competition is being held the first week of our stay.

Has anyone been there during this competition? Is the island, beaches, restaurants and resorts packed? Do we stand a chance of quiet and privacy anywhere on the island?

We are looking forward to a very peaceful and quiet time. Should we make our reservations for after the event?

Thanks for your help!

Lisa

You'll be able to get peace and privacy as you wish. I was there for the first and subsequent five times they held the event it there and it wasn't as big a deal as it's now. The island will be crowded more than normal, and some road off limits, during certain hours, but it won't be anything you won't be able to cope with and still enjoy the lovely Big Virgin. Because St. Croix is so big, even on its busiest day, it won't be anything like Charlotte Amalie with 2-3 cruise ships in. You'll have plenty of room and time to move about and enjoy yourlsef in peace. If you don't mind a little crowd, then you'll be OK. Otherwise, you can opt for an out of the way place to stay (i.e Carambola or some of the smaller places either on South Shore or by F'sted), or postpone to a week after the event.

Enjoy your stay!

The St Croix Triathalon is one of the major events of the year. Except for the morning of the race it will not affect your stay or enjoyment of St Croix at all. Yes there are many people who come to compete and view this event. But they are the kind of people you want to share an island with...

Check out stcroixtriahlon.com you will be pleasantly surprised and maybe encouraged to be on the island during this time...

Lisa,

We happened to be on St. Croix this past spring at the time the Triathalon was going on. I was worried that it might cause us to miss some days doing things around the island where the atheletes would have to be training, etc. but nothing like that happened. Instead we got caught up watching them ride bikes and on that Sunday we actually walked down to the road to take pictures and cheer them on as they raced by. It was exciting and I'm glad we didn't miss it. That night we had reservations to eat at the Terrace at the Buccaneer and saw alot of the atheletes there ----but not too crowded with them. The Terrace is a wonderfully romantic place at night--- large enough for privacy. Even had a large area of wicker couches and chairs to lounge in and listen to the band. There was even a Jump Up held downtown in honor of the atheletes and their families that we missed, and heard later from many people that we should have gone to, instead of the place we went. Naturally! This is a good time of year to be there, don't worry.

as every one has said, it really shouldn't affect you except on the morning of race when ,as earlier stated ,a lot of roads will closed. it really is a thrilling time to be onstx !! there usually is around 150 participants from around the world.having moved here, myhusband and i got to finally see it after watching it on cable for many years. we had a ball !! the cyclists went past our house twice. we where there alll morning cheering them on and helping to direct them being at the buccaner you be able to see the runners near the very end of the race

Thanks everyone! It may indeed be fun, but we will take a pass this time. We have moved our dates back a week. Thank you all for your input.
