Hello everyone. I will be in St. Thomas for over a month this winter. I will need to do some remote work over the Internet four days per week while I am there. My question is does anyone know how reliable the Internet access is in the Mahogany Run area? I am staying at a condo there. Does it go down often? I need to make preparations based on how reliable it is.
I apologize if this needs to go in the relocation board, but I applied for an account there and it still has yet to be approved.
Thank you!
Jeremy
Probably best to contact your condo owner and ask those questions as it will largely depend on which service they use.
Thank you. I will contact her. The information sheet she sent me says "the condo has high speed internet, but this is an island and service does go out from time to time.". I was just curious if anyone had a general idea as to what "from time to time" might mean. When I receive a reply from her I will post back what she says. Thanks again.
I think you'll find that the owners are erring on the side of caution with that statement. We do have short power outages "from time to time" (and that's really as specific as one can be!) but they rarely last for more than an hour unless a huge problem crops up. Enjoy your stay here!
You can get pay as you go mobile internet through Virgin Mobil as a backup, but you'd have to buy the modem. Though connections are usually up, things happen, so if you HAVE to access, you should have plan b.
BroadbandVI seems to have the best most reliable service that I have found.
Innovative and Choice service have their issiues with Choice, the worst in terms of reliability.
I received a reply from the condo owner...the provider is Innovate Powernet and it is high speed DSL. I'll probably see if my wife's IPhone will work as a backup hotspot in case Innovate goes out and I really need it. Thank you all for the replies and helpful information. Can't wait to get back down there!
