*Do you have noseems on your islands? I'm highly allergic to them.
Yes,s they have them on the beaches and they come out around dusk. Just keep a light dose of bug spray on during the day and either a ton of it on your legs and feet from evening on (or just stay away from sand after 5PM or so)
Spent 7 days on STJ and STT, some of the time camping at the ecotents. Never took the bug spray out of the backpack. I was amazed after all I had heard. We had some quite heavy rain too. Go figure!!
And the "noseeums" we have here may be a different insect than the ones in your state. I don't knwow their sicentific name, but some people call them 'sandfleas'...some call them 'sand flies'...while others say 'noseeums'. Any entomologists out there?
I was in STT and STJ for 9 days in early to mid-May and got lots of mosquito bites at open-air restaurants in the evenings. I kept forgetting to spray down with bug spray. On the few occasions when I remembered to spray, I didn't get any bites.
I'm prone to mosquito bites no matter where I go. There's something in my blood/skin that attracts them. My husband hardly got any bites at all.
We just got back last week and two of my kids (in their twenties) got eaten up by "skeeters" especially sitting out at night eating in Cruz Bay.
Taking tablets of "Balanced B Vitamins" is supposed to make you smell bad to mosquitos so they are more likely to leave you alone. Start well before you come so it has built up in your body. Some people also swear by tucking a "Bounce" fabric softener sheet in their waistband as they supposedly don't like that smell either. The B vitamins seem to work for me as I seldom get bitten.
