Are the Virgin Islands, particularly St. Thomas, considered part of the United States?

Politically, yes, they are since the VI is a US territory. However, culturally it is like another country.

Dear Ken,

A US Territory is governed by most Federal Laws. The income taxes are similar to the ones paid in the mainland but the money is paid to Territorial Agency, the Internal Revenue Bureau. We are governed by an elected governor, senators, etc. We have a Representative to Congress who is not allowed to vote. We do have lobbyists in the DC area. All in all, we are governed more like a small town with a "Governor" instead of Mayor however we cannot vote for President of the US.
Hope this helps.

Pamela
