Hi,

I am taking my family to St. Thomas this summer for a short but much needed vacation. My eight year old son is not a strong swimmer but is improving. I have heard that the Liminos and the New Horizons II are a charter boats that go to the Baths - do we have to swim from the boat to the rocks? I am also taking my elderly but young at heart parents who would like to see the sights around St. John. Can anyone recommend one charter (Liminois or New Horizons II) over another. I am having a difficult time figuring out which would accomodate my family the best.

Thanks in advance.
Mom and family

Hello Mom on the Go,

I remember reading a trip report that commented that they had to swim from the boat to the rocks... I believe they were on the Captain Nautica trip. Your best bet would be to ask Limnos and New Horizons II about swimming, if they can bring some of the folks in your group in by dinghy if swimming is required...etc.

For your parents I would suggest going over to St. John by passenger ferry and taking an island tour, visit Annaberg Plantation, pick a beach to spend a couple hours at, have lunch in Cruz Bay and maybe walk around the shops a bit and then head back to St. Thomas. Easy to do. You can also rent a car and drive yourselves around rather then doing a taxi tour - up to you.

If your son doesn't swim well I'm sure that they would have something he can hold onto to help him float to the shore. Check with the compaines. Or if not you could bring your own. I wouldn't let that stop you. In fact a snorkel vest would be great if you plan on doing any other snorkeling.

Both NH II and Limnos stop at a dock in Spanishtown (?). Wherever it is, they then drive you to the Baths after the crew has cleared customs and immigration for you(don't forget passports!)

We are going out with NHII on 4-12-05. We have a couple of ppl who arent the best of swimmers. I will let you know how we did it at the Baths.

Send me an email with your email address so that I can send you a report on our experience with NHII and the Baths.

We took the NHII trip last November. Yes, we did swim to the Baths, but kick boards are available and the crew will assist you, if needed. Also, you swim to the shore at Soggy Dollar if you wish to. Some stayed on the boat at Soggy Dollar. The crew was wonderful - nobody was forced to do anything they were not comfortable with. There was an older person who was not a good swimmer and the crew "towed" her in to shore via the kick board. She didn't even get her hair wet!

Also, Islander is right about the St. John tour - your parents would love it!

We are planning a trip back this November - can't wait!
