We are going to be visiting St. John early June (1st time) and am curious where the locals go when they vacation?

Most people visit family elsewhere. Or go to Europe. Or snowskiiing. Where do the folks in Orlando go?

I always use to laugh when my son would come home.
The return trip to STT we would have to stop and pick up a large bag of Arbys on the way to the airport
The 5 for 5 deal was sweet

Then he would call his buds to see if he could get a ride from the airport back to the east end, then drop the hint that he was carrying a bag of Arbys roast beef sandwiches. Never had to taxi

So maybe that is how we can beat the east end taxi.

Post on this site - Arriving at STT at 2 pm Friday
Will be carrying 10 Arbys Roast Beef Sandwiches
Party of 4 with Carry on Bags
Please stand by the Cyril E King Momument outside the airport with a sign

I will drive for meat! 😎

So if I am understanding you correctly, if I bring a large bag of Arby's to the island it may help pay for my vacation??? 🙂

Wolf you will find that there is a large group of young 19-25 year olds trying to make it in paradise.

There was a post here a few years back called liars,
escapist, and thieves (pretty sure that was the name) that addressed this topic. Most are escapist - running from something.

Many work as day charter mates, bartenders, waiters, or whatever job they can do hoping to get a big break. Some do - Most Don't
but they do have a lot of memories for future years.

It always seems the ladies to do better than the gentleman. For some reason they realize that they have to go home and get some sleep before work tomorrow. The guys take their tip money and party all night looking for the women who went home to bed at 11:30 or snaking after some tourist girl who stayed at Duffy's one Shark Bite too long.....

So the guys wake up in the morning - hung over and ready for another day in paradise and then realizing about noon the next day that last night they partied the rent check away and cannot remember the girls name, but are suppose to meet her at the Ritz at 9.

To wrap this up.....
It is this crowd that has a lust for Arbys that cannot be quinched by one visiting family to STT

Me, I cannot imagine sitting next to some fool on the airplane with 20 Arbys in a bag
Oh yeah that was my son.

Here again I would bet that if you went to the relocation board and posted what I wrote earlier on the thread - some beat up old jeep, with a sunburn face, knotted hair, wearing a pair of Oakley's would be standing there in board shorts, flip flops, no shirt and water dripping from both sides of their mouth - holding a sign saying. Will Drive for Meat!

Locals generally use vacation to visit family in the states , or supplement what we don't have here. Hence the snowskiing comment. Also we use a big city experience -- NYC, Vegas, Chicago etc. and attend sporting events , concerts, museums, cultural festivals , [Spoleto,JazzFest, etc.] , go see our children in college or at graduation, -- hopefully?, -- take a long car ride, road trip. All things like that.
Many locals take mini- vacations here in the Caribbean. 3 days in Anegada can relieve a lot of island fever.
Short boat trips to neighboring islands work too.
Sometimes a vacation is planned around a stateside shopping trip as well. Shopping somehow is supposed to relieve stress -- go figure.
I doubt many local people would go on vacation just to find a chain restaurant -- probably they could find that without leaving a major airport and its access road or in Puerto Rico at the Mall.
Many visitors do bring treats that we miss as presents -- I get PA Dutch ring bologna and donuts from my house guests.

My wife goes to America to go shopping. She has to get to Marshalls, TJ Maxx, and Target at least twice a year or she gets jittery. As for me, I live on vacation!!!!!

I myself, have always simply gone back home to Elmira, NY where my family is. I have been doing this for 26 yrs now and had finally decided it was time to go on a REAL vacation! This year, Jeff and I are going to Alaska, still going to see family...his kids whom were born here and now live there of all places! Not his first trip there, but mine! Funny thing is that I made the above decision and then guess what? My son moved to Ithaca, NY last spring and my daughter, also born here, JUST moved lock, stock, and barrel to Elmira with my Grandchildren! Elmira, here I come! 🙂 (now I'll be going up more often than I used too)!
I DO have to say that shopping is always at the top of the list for trips to the states, I think my family gets extremely frustrated with me!
