Hi Islander

I will be in CA with my cruise. If I had to choose between Secret Harbor in St Thomas or Trunk Bay in St John for great snorkeling,,which one would you suggest. I basically leave port at 6pm. Ive been to some great snorkeling spots in StJ but never to Trunk Bay. I was told that Secret Harbor has a nice beach & good snorkeling.

Help me pick one please

thanks so much

Marge

trunk bay will probably have a lot more people than s. harbor, and of course it's not as quickly accessible as s.h.--you can be at s.h. in ~20 min from cruise ship in CA, but probably ~ 1 hr for t.b., assuming you time the STT-STJ ferry just right. both have good snorkeling, but t.b. also offers the snorkel trail (a dozen or so plaques on the bottom beneath red, white and blue marker buoys) describing the aquatic flora/fauna you will see. and you would see a greater variety of flora at t.b. there is also a $4 admission fee to t.b. and s.h. is free.
my choice would be s.h. and use the hour saved in travel time and the $4 to have a toddy on the beach at blue moon cafe at s.h.!
but you can't go wrong no matter what you decide.

Hello Marge,

Since you have been to St. John before I would say go with Secret Harbor and use the commute time (taxi + ferry + taxi) you save to enjoy St. Thomas. Secret Harbor has pretty decent snorkleing, a good restaurant/bar and nice beach.

Has anyone on this board been to Secret Harbor. Did you love it? Please tell me about it.

Just got home from yet another USVI "vaca" on Sunday. Spent the first part of the week at Bolongo (so much fun!) and the last 5 days at Secret Harbor. Absolutely loved it. We had a gorgeous 1-bedroom condo on the 2nd floor right on the beach...which is palm- lined and the sand is so soft & warm. The snorkeling is really good right in the entire cove...well worth a few hours every day. The Blue Moon has wonderful food...yet the service was a bit slow. The pool is very nice and just a short walk up the hill...only problem was that the hot tub was not heated. The clientele is mixed. Young people with little kids, some honeymooners, and a decent amount of oldsters who are, undoubtedly, owners. It was great to see, actually! I would like to return with my 87-year-old mother - she'll feel very comfortable there. Thumbs up for ANYONE!

Bert: The whirlpool IS heated! It is energy efficient solar heat! 😉 You will find very few "heated" pools and spas in the tropics. I am going to spread the rumor that Secret Harbour owners are oldsters...That ought to clear out the party-hardy group! LOL

Guess we didn't spend enough time there at night.....we could have joined the "party-people"! We are married 50-somethings (going on 30) with alot of fun & sport in our bones. Next time! By the way, we just loved everyone who was on the beach during our stay. About the hot tub - you're right...thanks!
