We will be in STJ the second week in August - all we have is our Driver's license - we can't find our birth certificates and it is too late to get a passport - will we have any trouble as long as we stay on the USVI? Thanks

You don't need any ID on your flight to San Juan, STT or STX other than what is required for any airline flight (driver's license).

Returning to the continental US you must be able to prove that you were born in the USA or have a legal right to enter the USA.

Passport is the best for your return. A birth certificate with an official seal will do. Anything else set you up for a hassel and possibly missing your flight. Sometimes some people get lucky and get by with less.

Entering the USVI from a US Airport: U.S. citizens are not required to have passports or proof of citizenship when entering into the U.S. Virgin Islands from a U.S. airport. Please note however that airlines have different policies and may ask for proof of identity at check-in.

Entering the USVI from a Foreign Airport: All arrivals from foreign airports are required to show proof of citizenship and pass through customs.

Leaving the USVI, Returning to the US Mainland: All persons leaving the USVI, whether American citizens or not, must be prepared to show proof of citizenship upon leaving the USVI to return to the mainland.

Accepted documents for Proof of Citizenship for Americans: 1. A passport issued under competent authority, 2. An Alien Registration Card (this applies to United States of America permanent residents only) 3. A certified copy of a birth certificate with government issued photo identification (this applies to Canadian and United States citizens only) 4. A Certificate of Naturalization, issued by the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service.

Citizens of any country other than the U.S. should follow U.S. travel regulations and requirements for entry into the USA.

Hello Nicole,

It depends on which state you are in. You need to call the local Dept. of Motor Vehicle or Bureau of Motor Vehicles in your area.

Some states will just take your USVI license and ask to see id, social security card, charge you a fee, have you fill out a form, take a picture and issue you that states license. And then other states might require you to take the road test or maybe a class.... not sure as it depends on the state you are in. Contact your local DMV or BMV to find out what they require.

FYI--- All you married girls--
A friend of mine recently went to Jamaica for vacation. She did not have a passport, only birth certificate and drivers license. She was told that she had to have her marriage certificate also, because her name was not the same as on her birth certificate and drivers license. Was wondering - if you have a current passport, in your married name, will you still need the marriage license...anyone heard about that?? Ours were issued before 9/11 and they never asked for our marriage license when we got them...just birth certificates and drivers licenses.

If you have a current passport, you don't need ANYTHING else.

I know that it is a good idea to bring a birth certificate but my husband and I weren't even asked to show it once all last week in STX. They asked what state we came from and why we were there but know one went further than that. I went so unprepared though and not too many people fake an Indiana/Chicago accent.
